    Default EP45-DS3L / E7400 Next Step...

    Hey all. After reading everything I could find here and elsewhere, I solved my EP43-DS3L / E7400 /OCZ Gold PC2-8500 problems by REPLACING the motherboard and ram. Turns out that old combination wasn't very compatible.

    Now I have an EP45-DS3L (F9), same cpu, and Patriot 2x1 PC2-8500 ram (PDC22G8500ELK). I have a Sigma Phantom case with a 550W p/s, and stock cooling for the cpu. My rig is currently stable (8+ hours running Prime95) at 3.5 GHz with the memory running at 800. Max cpu temp was 64c but it was mostly below 60 (57 avg maybe).

    I was stable at 3.5 GHz with the RAM at 1066 MHz until I swapped vid cards (from PNY Verto 9600 GT to a PNY XLR8 9800 GT). First the system wouldn't Boot (kept cycling off and re-starting never getting even showing a screen). I pulled and re-installed the ram and it booted (first with one stick then with both). I was getting lockups (frozen cursor and screen in plain windows and games, etc.) at 3.5 / 1066 so I slowed the RAM down and also increased PCI Express Frequency to 101. It's running well since then.

    I'm looking for suggestions now for setting the memory to a more ideal setting (5:6 now @ 800MHz) and a next O/C step (if any). Should I try for a 400 MHz fsb ? Also, would the system perform better or more stably at 400 fsb and 800 ram speed (1:1) than 400 fsb and 1066? At this point I'm not looking to go to the bleeding edge, just want to get it rock solid and optimize performance a bit.

    Well for you 800 vs 1066 question, you would just have to benchmark both ways to see which is best. I can say at 800 with 1066 ram you can likely use tighter main timings like 444-12 instead of 555-15, but only a benchmark comparing both ways would let you know for sure.

    Well, you may not have very good temps with a stock cooler at 400 FSB, but you could try.

    Here would be optimal settings for your ram with the above settings you are using now. With the ram speed increased to 1066 of course

    lsdmeasap, I tried those settings and the machine wouldn't boot (cycling trying to start up, no display, just fans on for a few seconds then off, repeating). I was able to get it to boot with one (and only one) of the Dimms in Slot 1. The other dimm would not allow a boot when alone in Slot 1. I started trying to raise some of the memory settings, but two dimms dual channel isn't booting now. Since it boots with one dim m and not the other, I'm thinking I have a bad dimm. Could running them at 2.2V have done it even though they're spec'd at 2.2-2.3? Could it be different timings for the two dimms? They came in the same pack. I might have to take the ram back to Microcenter.

    My local Microcenter carries these in DDR2-1066 (none on Gigabyte's supported list):
    - Corsair Memory Twin 2X 4GB DDR2-1066 (PC-8500) CL5 DIMM Memory Kit (Two 2GB Memory Modules)
    - Crucial Memory Ballistix 2GB DDR2-1066 (PC-8500) CL5 Memory Kit (Two 1GB Memory Modules)

    I'm considering stepping down to DDR2-800 (PC2-6400) for cost and selection. What do you recommend?

    Could be a bad dim as you suspect. So you have tested and with the same settings one works and the other does not? If so you will need to RMA the set

    No, they would have the same timings since they are a set. They could have came DOA? Or yes, possibly 2.2 could have damaged one if it was already partially damaged. I think since they are spec'd at 2.2-2.3 that should not have damaged them in itself as I have used 2.1-2.2 on 1.8V ram. most DDR2 reguardless of spec is ok to 2.1 or so and even higher for some if quality allows it.

    I can't really say about those Corsairs as they declined to ship me any samples for testing and seemed to blow me off after a few emails back and forth. And I was asking for samples for compatibility and stability testing due to some users having issues. So if that says anything to you about the companies train of thought or Customer service then? All up to you there.

    Alrighty then. Stable at 3.4 GHz, 399 fsb, 800 MHz RAM (1:1). 7 hrs on Orthos. Those Crucial Ballistix were the ticket, Lsdmeasap. Thanks a bunch. I think i'll run it at this for a while (just a stock cooler).

    NICE to hear! So I take it you got ther 2.0V sticks then? Which, the 8500 ones or 6400?

    Either way, They should clock very well if you decide to overclock them
