Default overclocking the Gigabyte Ga ep31 ds3l

I have never overclocked before and tried to overclock this motherboard with no success.

    Intel Pentuim E2160
    Gigabyte GA-P31-DS3L
    CORSAIR TWIN2X2048-6400
    Nvidia Bfg 7600gt graphics card.
    570watts psu

I tried changing the fsb to 334mhz and enabling the clock control. when i save and exit bios the system double boots and then returns to its defaults settings.(must be doing something wrong somewhere)

Did you read the guide? I ask because I could give you settings, but that would not help you learn at all and there is a Very nice, FULL Guide for P35/31 posted here.

    Here is the guide >>>
    http://forums.tweaktown.com/f69/giga...g-guide-26112/

Not trying to not help you, but you should read all that first before you try to overclock since you say you dont know much about it. Always read first so you know a little, then try things out, then ask for others help if you run into issues.

I can help ya for sure, but you should read a bit as well so you know what you are changing when I tell you to change something

I read and followed the guide and was succesful in overclocking the cpu to 3ghz. I followed the guide in running an extreme stress test and run core temp. During the stress test my cpu temp hit 70 and the alarm went off. I stopped running all programs and switched of the computer.

I Restarted the computer, entered bios and increase the vcore volt to plus 1 (not major) from then on cpu refused to overclock. I have tried reduce - 1 and so on , no avail. the computer stopped posting anytime i save and exit , i have to turn on the computer myself.

i remove the board battery and replaced it after 2 minutes , turned on the computer, entered the settings. this time the computer posted but always go back to default setting.

    pls help.

Sorry for the late reply here, I had some connection issues over the weekend and am now trying to catch back up with things around here

Please give me the settings you are using that fail and I will advise back. And it does sound like you need to buy a better cooler if you want to overclock any further >>>

This is Just a template I use to ask people their settings, pay no attention to the numbers in it, replace with yours

The thing is my computer is not overclocked at all. I was succesull in reaching 3.00ghz with the following set up. The cpu returned to default after i switched it off due to temp reaching 70. I used the same setting but no overclock.

Ahh well 70C would not reset your settings to stock, but a failed overclock might. Your CPU would be fine up to 90+C, not that you should run it there I am just saying 70C would not cause it to change any BIOS settings

Did your PC do a Triple reboot when you first applied the overclock, if so then it failed and even if you seen overclocked settings in the BIOS they would not have been used but defaults would have been applied instead

Not sure, are you? If that CPU will do 3Ghz? I would think so, but I just have not heard much about it for so long I can't remember.

Try this for 3Ghz or 2.66 using 333 FSB >>>>

Robust Graphics Booster___________ [Auto or Fast]
    CPU Clock Ratio ____________ [9 or 8 (3Ghz/2.66Ghz)]
    CPU Host Clock Control_ [Enabled]
    CPU Host Frequency (MHz)__________ [333]
    PCI Express Frequency (Mhz)_______ [100]
    C.I.A. 2__________________________ [Disabled]
    System Memory Multiplier (SPD)____ [2.40]
DRAM Timing Selectable_______ SPD __ [Manual]

    Performance Enhance = [Standard]

    CAS Latency Time________________ 4
    Dram RAS# to CAS# Delay_________ 4
    Dram RAS# Precharge Delay_______4
    Precharge Delay (tRAS)__________ 12

Set all below here to the highest Value, then you can lower later

ACT to ACT Delay (tRRD)_________ 3-5
Rank Write to READ Delay________ 3-6
    Write to Precharge Delay_________ 4-6
    Refresh to ACT Delay______________ 54-62
    Read to Precharge Delay__________ 3-5
    Static tRead Value_______________ 7-10
Static tRead Phase Adjust________ [Auto] << Always Auto

    System Voltage Control____ [Manual]
    DDR2 OverVoltage Control__ [+0.300V]
    PCI-E OverVoltage Control_ [+0.1V]
    FSB OverVoltage Control___ [+0.1V]
    (G)MCH OverVoltage Control [+0.1V] << +0.2-0.3
CPU Voltage Control_______ [1.325] I made minor increases. << I would go as far as 1.45 or so, you may be getting far less in windows. You can always lower it later

Limit CPUID Max. to 3.....................: [Disabled]
No-Execute Memory Protect............: [disabled] << enabled
    CPU Enhanced Halt (C1E)................: [Disabled]
    C2/C2E State Support....................: [Disabled]
    x C4/C4E State Support..................: [Disabled]
CPU Thermal Monitor 2(TM2) ...........: [Enabled]
    CPU EIST Function.........................: [Disabled]
Virtualization Technology................: [Disabled] (This one is funny I saw it a couple of days ago and now I don’t see it anymore) << Your CPU does not offer this

I didnt see this post until yesterday, sry. I already overclocked to 2.40ghz.

Didnt change much. here are the settings.

    Robust Graphics Booster___________ [Auto ]
CPU Clock Ratio ____________ [8 /2.40Ghz)] (On in systems information it shows as 2.7ghz)
    CPU Host Clock Control_ [Enabled]
    CPU Host Frequency (MHz)__________ [300]
    *PCI Express Frequency (Mhz)_______ [100]*
    C.I.A. 2__________________________ [Disabled]
    System Memory Multiplier (SPD)____ [2.00]
DRAM Timing Selectable_______ SPD __ [Manual]

    *Performance Enhance = [Standard]*

    System Voltage Control____ [Manual]

    CPU Voltage Control_______ [normal]

    Legacy usb storage detect- [Disabled]

Limit CPUID Max. to 3.....................: [Disabled]
    No-Execute Memory Protect............: [disabled]
    CPU Enhanced Halt (C1E)................: [Disabled]
    C2/C2E State Support....................: [Disabled]
    x C4/C4E State Support..................: [Disabled]
CPU Thermal Monitor 2(TM2) ...........: [Enabled]
    CPU EIST Function.........................: [Disabled]

    Vcore is still at normal.

    Idle cpu temps 39-45 cpu.

However, there are several problems on which i am unsure about.

The first one is a bsod: error code 1000008e. Fearing that this had occured because of the overclock. I reset everything to their default setting. Even then, it occured about three more times on default(same error code).
It stop after i restored my system to settings 2 days earlier.

The other one, orthos hits the 70c mark when ever i stress. Is this a good or bad thing?

    I appreciate your help.

I need to see your FULL Settings to advise about your issues.

70C is ok, and would not cause this or any similar issues.

Can you get the BSOD Code from the BSOD Screen next time it happens and then I can better find out if it is a software/driver issue. The code I want would look similar to this >> 0x000000

If the BSOD Screen goes by to fast you can disable the automatic restart so the screen will stay up until you manually reboot. To do that go to control panel, system, advanced tab, then startup and recovery settings button, then in the new window in the system failure tab Uncheck Automatically restart
