Forgot to mention -- I also tried cold booting after an extended "off period" today, using only 2 sticks (1 kit) at a time. With both kits. I didn't have any problems here. Only seems to be with all 4 sticks at the same time.

Since you at least had success cold booting using only 2 sticks, it's very likely that you'll be ok using a 2x2Gb kit.

BTW, which version Bios are you using?

My setup with 2x2GB Mushkin memory has never had cold boot problems and I've tested extensively with settings from 457 - 494 MHz (stable), and 495 - 525 MHz (not stable). I've tested with MCH voltage from 1.24 - 1.28, with 1.26 or 1.28 as my preferred setting. Maybe I lucked out with better than average parts, but my board has been a dream to overclock.

Has anyone tested their rigs using only 1 memory stick?
Have you tried running with only 2 sticks in slots #2 & #4?
Have you tested using a different set of memory?

If you include a bios template with your current settings, we might be able to make some suggestions.

Good idea; I'll post the template later today when I'm home. I have tried using only 1 mem stick, also using different slots, and there weren't any problems that way. Unfortunately I don't have another set (or 2 sets) to test with.

I've read some good things about Mushkin memory and these boards. May I ask which model kit you're using?

Oh, and I'm using the F8 bios, which seems to be the latest at the Gigabyte site now.

The F8 is known to be unstable. Others have had much success using the latest F9 beta bios including myself. You can download the latest bios here:
    http://forums.tweaktown.com/f69/giga...st-bios-28441/

The F9b is the latest beta bios and seems to work pretty well. The F9a bios includes an updated bios for the ICH10R while the F9b went back to the older ICH10R bios (dunno why...). Take your pick. Whatever you choose, it'll be better than the F8 bios... I had some real nightmares with that bios.

Your bios setup looks ok except for your CPU termination... do you have it set at auto?

Also, try disabling Extreme Memory Profile.

    I'm running XP2-8500 2x2GB [p/n 996599], it's in my signature.

The XP2 series is their performance memory, the HP2 series is their standard product line. My 8500 memory is only $3 more expensive than the XP2-6400. Their ASCENT line uses a high tech heat spreader, but they are much thicker and require 2mm memory slot spacing which eliminates most (if not all) Gigabyte boards if you want to use 4 memory sticks.

My memory runs very cool, but this may be helped by my down-draft GeninII cpu cooler.

Re: CPU Termination, yeah that was a typo, it's on auto. The CPU Core is what I meant was set to auto and was reporting at 1.325. I also disabled the EMP.

Still had the issue using the new bios though when I started the system just now. After it finally started I went into the bios settings and got a message about a boot failure due to overclocking (although I'm not doing that) and it said some of my settings may have changed.

All of the setttings looked the same except the timings were back to auto and were reporting at 5-7-7-24. I've gotten that message before, but that's the first time I've actually noticed any settings changed.

    'm running XP2-8500 2x2GB [p/n 996599], it's in my signature.
LOL, it was hiding in plain sight. Thanks. I think I might go for the 800Mhz 4-4-4-12 kit this time -- was hoping I'd have more luck running that stable. Although that still requires 2.1 volts. But since so far I've had no problems with only 2 sticks with this mem at those settings, I'm optimistic.

Thanks again for all of the replies!

    Mushkin memory additional info:

The XP2 series memory is rated at 2.0 - 2.1 volts, and runs best when set at the low end of the voltage spec. It is completely stable at 1066 - 1104 with 2.02 volts. It appears that 2.1 volts is only needed if you're trying to run memory faster than 1100.

Their XP2-8000 Redline series is rated very high by users and reviewers.
