    Default Trying to OC e8400 on EP45-UD3R

    Hey guys. I've got an e8400 cooled with an HDT-1283 on an EP45-UD3R with 4gb (2x2) DDR2-800 (OCZ Reaper OCZ2RPR800C44GK). I've never overclocked my systems so I'm new to this. After I built this system I realized I had some good OC potential so I thought I'd try.

    My goal is to try to get to 4.2ghz. At 4.0ghz I got Windows XP to boot and ran Prime95 small FFTs for an hour without errors. 49c at the cores under load (speedfan), CPU-Z reported vcore at 1.264 under load and 1.296 at idle. I know, 1 hr is not long enough to call it stable. I tried to bump it up to 4.2ghz with all the same settings except for the FSB and could not post. Here are the settings I used for 4.0. Any suggestions?

    Adding all your specifications is most helpful.

    To quickly add Specifications to your to sig:

    1. Copy my sig.
    2. Replace my specs with yours.
    3. Then goto ur "Your Tweaktown User control panel".
    4. Click on "Edit Signature" and add it to your sig.

    And, do you have "MemSet" (Tweakers.fr) installed?

    I'll have to check out MemSet when I get home, I don't have it. Is that for adjusting memory timings in Windows or something?

    Even though the description of "MemSet" describes adjusting timings in windows, I only suggest setting timings manually in your MOBO's BIOS and NOT within Windows.

    In other words , "MemSet" is awesome for reading your RAM chip's SPD verbatim. And therefore it's just as invaluable an "Information" utility as CPU-Z is.

    You definitley need to raise your vcore, depending on how good your chip is you may need between 1.35-1.4. My E8400 needs 1.4v- You can view stable voltages in my sig for details to change your settings, everything is simular to yours.

    You may want to slacken your memory timings to get there tho as your ram will need to run at 890mhz instead of 800mhz. So best to slacken them first to make sure you take all stress of memory and put all stress on CPU, this way you should be able to find the min stable voltage for your E8400.

    I stressed my 4.0Ghz o/c with the settings I listed in my first post for 9+ hours without any errors. Sounds like I'll have to test a higher vcore for 4.2Ghz. I'm not sure what to do about the others (Termination, PLL, MCH core...).

    As for the RAM, maybe you could tell me if this was a good test. With my CPU clocked at 3.6Ghz (400x9) I set my system memory multiplier to 2.4D. That would put it at 960Mhz. I used all of the timings listed in my first post here (except tRFC was 60) and ran memtest for 10 hours with zero errors. So with these settings, except maybe I should bump tRFC to 60, shouldn't I be OK overclocking the RAM to 933Mhz for a 4.2Ghz overclock?

    You should be ok doing that, but as you overclock CPU and RAM this stresses the MCH more(north bridge) so you may need to add some more voltage there.

    The other settings should be set all manually.

    CPU PLL i would set to 1.6
    CPU Term i would set to something just off your vcore. For 1.4v core maybe 1.38 termination? (You can test whats better).

    Everything else is set ok for you to give things a try, be aware that I have never been able to reach a stable 4.2, depending on how lucky of a CPU you have, 4ghz may be your limit.

    Your methods of testing memory and cpu are fine, but you may considering also doing a test that blends both methods instead, Memtest will stress memory, but not memory and cpu you at the same time. Testing these indpendantly means that your North Brige isnt really being stressed and may cause instability if this is untested.

    You should consider intel burn in test or OCCT for your testing, both are far more simpler and easier to use.

    OK, I am going to post the settings I just used to boot at 4.2Ghz. I need to stress test since all I did was a quick 10 minutes of Prime small FFTs for starters. I'm wondering if anybody could take a look at these settings and see if you have any recommendations for improvements or if I have set anything that would not be considered a good idea. I would like to try for lowering my voltages if it will let me at all. By the way, after 10 minutes of Prime95, the cores were at 56c under full load with a voltage of 1.328 (CPU-Z). The idle voltage jumps up to 1.376. Thanks for the help so far!!

    Your settings are fine, I would test for longer and only consider changing any if you fail.

    I would use intel burn test if i was you to stress test, leave it going for 24 hours. Your temps are good.

    Once you know your 24 hour stable, you can then start to reduce the vcore and vtt until you find you are still stable. Intel burn test is good for a quick tests on memory and cpu, it takes around 30 min for 5 passes.

    After finding your min stable Vcore voltage and vtt voltage, I would then move on tightening your memory timings.

    Its a long winded procedure unfortunatley due to trial and error.

    Btw, with your temps, what case are you using and do you have the xigmatek bolt mounted or are you using the push pins? Also. What temp monitor are you using?

    At that voltage my cpu gets up to 75'c...

    Thank you for your help, Dodgexander. I will try the IntelBurnTest. Just for kicks, I tried using all of the same settings but bumped my speed up to 4.4Ghz. I booted into Windows but failed Prime on one core after only 2 minutes. I want to bump my voltages down, if possible, not up; so I went back to 4.2Ghz.

    To answer your questions, my case is:

    It is a little old, I got it for my build 4 years ago. But it's got two 120mm fans, one sucking air in, the other blowing it out, and the Xigmatek's fan blows right into the exhaust fan. I also added a nice little 60mm blowing right on the MCH. My Xigmatek is mounted by the push-pins. I filled in the cracks between the heat pipes with AS5 and then applied a very thin line on each heat pipe. I use Speedfan to monitor temps, I calibrated it according to a very informative post on Tom's. I should note that my ambient is fairly low, about 19c.
