    OUCH!!!

Maybe a 2nd bios profile could have EIST and the C1/C2/C4 options enabled to save power consumption. You probably have all of these settings disabled with your current overclock.

Wouldn't under-clocking your system lower temps considerably. I've read that many HTPC setups underclock their systems for lower power consumption, lower temps, and less noise from slower fan speeds.

speedstep is on. it steps me down to 1.6 GHz, but it still idles at 54. what i need are options in the BIOS to turn off the cores. i guess i'll try earlier versions.

Is a better cpu cooler an option? If your idle temps are normal for your setup, maybe a higher end cpu case would lower temps. My case uses 7 fans, four of which are 140mm fans. I could also install an 80mm fan that would cool the underside of the cpu. My CM 690 case is hardly high end, but I've seen other newer cases that would easily outperform my setup.

Hopefully someone else will have a solution.

it's a watercooled 2U rack. can't change it. don't worry about it though, it's alright.

    FWIW --

I'm not at home right now, so I don't have my EP45-UD3R / Q9550 sitting in front of me. So going by memory here....

Did you try turning on the "Advanced Features" in the BIOS? From the main BIOS screen, type (Ctrl)(F1)<ctrl><f1>. Then when you enter the BIOS sub-menu, there will be a few things there that weren't there before.

Don't know if this will solve your problem, but it's easy to try.</f1></ctrl>

that didn't work, but you may be onto something. the users's manual indeed mentions that CTRL+F1 unlocks more options, but none of them are present in my F6 BIOS. i still can't find any "multithreading" option under advanced bios features. only EIST, C1E, and TM2.

according to the user's manual, the multithreading option only gives me the choice of four cores, or one. so forget that. i need two cores on. this is quite a let down. i have an EVGA 680i board that would let me turn off whatever cores I wanted, even core 0. oh well. thanks guys.
