Default Some Help For OC Newbie, e8400 + ep45-ds3

    Hi all,

Have been playing with new setup, total OC'ing newbie; have gone through the sticky's and so on but am having difficulites translating the different bios settings to my own version... Have been experimenting for a few hours now but honestly need some pointers... ;)

Am aiming for a stable 3.6ghz OC, the current settings error after 13 mins of Prime95. Have been gradually upping the VCore, but am wondering if there's something else not set right, as I'm up to 1.3125v's and climbing, on what should be a fairly modest OC... Usure on what to do, for example, with the MCH settings?

Am currently running the below settings, on these specs:

    e8400 c0
    ep45-ds3, A2 revision on F4 BIOS
2x2gb Kingston Value RAM 5-5-5-18 rated at 1.8
    Lapped Big Typhoon HSF

    Any help muchly appreciated.

Each E8400 chip is different, so dont base your vcore on other configs. I for instance need 1.4v to reach 4ghz, you may need 1.35 or even higher for 3.6. You can also change your MCH voltage a bit higher and set CPU Termination and PLL manually. CPU Termination should be just a few notches off your vcore, so a 1.3v vcore would be ok for 1.2 termination, but you can also try 1.24 or 1.28. They scale together. Keep VTT on manual 1.6v.

Hey there. This thread may help:

    http://forums.tweaktown.com/f69/stab...oltages-30561/

It sure helped me get to 3.6 easy, but I have the same mobo as the thread author. Yours may not be too different.

It is my understanding that you do not want to leave CPU Termination, CPU PLL (and ICH?) voltages on auto. Maybe 1.2 or 1.3 for MCH. You may want to try the settings in the above mentioned thread, except adjusted to your RAM's specifications.

So, sorry, the "VVT" is set through the PLL setting...? I should lock "CPU PLL" to 1.6v?

There are three different MCH settings; guessing you're talking about the "MCH Core"?

Thanks heaps for that, I did have a read through and actually copied it's motherboard spec sheet for this thread. ;)

It's just hard to translate the differences, and to know if I should be upping some things, as I'm not sure if some things are higher than I should go because of the better RAM used in that instance...

Will up the "MCH core" to 1.3, "Vcore" to 1.35, "CPU Termination" to 1.24 and the "PLL" to 1.6, and leave benching as I go to work...

If there's any more comments please leave them! Thanks.

Hi there. I'm the one that posted those settings for the E8400. You can see links to the post in my signature. At first glance, it seems to me that you have too many settings in Auto. Please refer to my post. With your memory, please set FSB to 401, not 400, and run on 2.00B not 2.00D. That should be all you need. Everything else will run at low, safe, and stable voltages.

The problem with your settings is that the memory timings are all on auto, while the MCH strap is not. That will never do for stability.

Let us know how you go.

OMG I love you... ;) I'll try these as soon as I get home tonight.

    Just a few questions:

    Pretty straight forward...

Just 2.00D, then other ratio's... Does this affect it in a large way?

Oh, ok, so you lock it to that manually even though it's the right numbers in Auto...? Does it change itself dynamically in Auto, or something like that? (My newness to OC'ing this is quite obvious at this point...)

So you just bump these up a little more for stability?

Here's another one I was concerned about after reading your thread, I don't seem to have this option...

A bump to the MCH Core, fair enough...

So, same as above; You lock these to the default setting even though they're apparently set right in Auto?

Thank you so much for the time you've spent on this... Legend! ;)

    Hi there!

Some of the settings I suggest will only become selectable once you manually set other values, so it may be perfectly normal for you not to see some options.

To answer some of your questions in order: The 2.00B option is not available because you set MCH Frequency Latch to [400]. When you do that, you only have D ratios (400 strap) available to you. In my settings, I suggest you set MCH Frequency Latch to [Auto] and then ALL straps and ratios become available to you, including the 2.00B. MCH Frequency Latch is one of the few settings that is okay on AUTO for this reason... you can access all straps. I'm recommending the 2.00B Strap as opposed to the 2.00D Strap because the 2.00B has slightly tighter internal Northbridge timings which is preferable for performance.

On the 5-5-5-18, yes always lock manually. What you see in the BIOS can sometimes differ from what is actually in use, so if you manually specify, there is no risk of ambiguity.

The sub-timings 4-4-6-54-2-2T have been loosened for stability as you state. Since we're using the 2.00B Strap, we want to make sure our memory is happy. After you are sure you are stable, you can try reducing these sub-timings, but truthfully, you won't gain too much performance, and may become unstable!

The driving strength profiles become active after you manually set memory timings. I think that is why you are not seeing them yet. When you manually set the timings above, you should find the option for memory driving strength profile.

The small bump in MCH Core voltage to 1.200V from 1.100V is a good thing to do, especially since you're running 4GB in 2x2 configuration. The CPU will still be happy with stock voltage.

On the CPU voltages, yes, specify a value rather than leaving Auto. They will be adjusted too high by system if you leave on Auto. Only settings that specifically say [Auto] in the template should be left as such.

Test the values and see how they work for you. I have the E0 stepping E8400, and I see you have the C0 stepping, but I'm sure you will have good luck in your testing... let us know!

Bad news. Unable to get it to boot with those settings... Have tried upping the vcore but still wouldn't booy...

All was identicle except for two things:

The "memory driving strength profile" still wasn't present. If anyone else has a ep45-ds3, do they know why this is?

Also the setting for "ICH Core" wasn't there.

    Any help appreciated...!
