WOW...I am so angry right now. So I went and d/l'ed prime95 for Mac and ran a small FFT test first (failed), then I tried the Blend test (failed)...although I suspected I would fail blend after failing small FFT. At least 2 workers fail with 0 seconds because of 0.5 expected 0.4 problem. I didn't copy the exact error down and if I need to that is fine.

So for the sake of wanting to pass the torture test I loaded optimized defaults and then only changed RAM voltage to 2.1V. Timings defaulted at 5-5-5-18 so I just left them. Right now temps are between 39C and 46C under full load for the past 20 minutes. I realize the Q6600 isn't the overclocking champ, but I just don't understand what is so unstable about 3.0GHz.

What is the best way to approach this? I guess this means starting from scratch. I am going to try and find my FSB wall for the hell of it right now since my instinct was to just go with 333FSB before, but since that compromise didn't work.... I will hopefully not corrupt my OS...that would be my luck.

I am sitting here running 400FSB X7 for 2.8GHz...not what I was shooting for, but yeah....RAM at 5-5-5-18 AUTO all. I have been running prime for about 30 min with no errors. Just a note, I couldn't get 401+FSB. I am pretty sure it is due to voltages, but I will keep testing.

See my first post in this thread for the approach I used.

I understand the desire to get to a significant overclock ASAP, and some people get lucky finding a stable combination quickly. I prefer a slow methodical approach, probing one limit at a time. That way I don't get as confused or frustrated.

On my system, with 4x2GB of OCZ Reaper HPC 1066 RAM, I still have not managed to get the RAM past 950MHz. That is moderately frustrating. But I have a stable and cool overclock, and I can live with that for now.

Failures in the small FFT test really suggest that you need more CPU Core voltage. A G0 stepping Q6600 should be able to do 3GHz no problem. I'm puzzled why yours is giving you such a hard time.

So I am again just updating where I am at. I started over and lowered
my multiplier to 6x, but with a 400MHz FSB. Unfortunately that puts
me at stock speed..a bit faster I know. I was going off the deep end
trying to figure out memory timings to get it to boot so Auto seemed
to get me up and going. I went with the high end of all the voltages
suggested to me except the Vcore which I left at 1.325V. My big problem
now is finding out what the motherboard thought the correct timings
were for all of the RAM settings. Can I assume it is the numbers next
to the Auto? Iwouldn't think so, but I really don't know. if so I put
those numbers in my list after Auto...

I believe the timings are from the RAM's SPD. As such they will be conservative. You can try dialing them in later.

Currently at 3.2 (356x9) @ 1.5Vcore. Not happy with the high Vcore, but I will lower it very soon. Temps are 57C-60C at full load with Prime95 Blend for 2 hours. I haven't passed 60C yet and hope I don't, but maybe if I can get Vcore down to 1.4-1.45 I can save 2-3C. It's funny because I was sorta worried about my huge temp spread across the cores at idle, but once they go full load I get a 3-4C spread instead of a 8-10C spread.

RAM is at 5-5-5-18 @ 2.1V on [manual], BUT all other timings are still on [Auto]. I am afraid to touch the other settings at the moment. I am where I wanted to be and am stable thus far. I was reading some reviews that seem to indicate I could get my timings back down to 4-4-4-12 if I am willing to pump more voltage, but that was with 4GB and I just don't have balls that big right now.

If you want my suggested settings and timings again let me know, and provide me with your final settings you are using so I know where you are and I will advise back

12 Hours & 45 Minutes Prime95 Blend stable. Temps ~58C-60C @ 1.55v. OH!! Did I mention this is with 4GB of RAM . I was reading some more about my A-data modules and they are rated 800+ so I figure that is why it handles so well. There are people using them at 1066, BUT running them at 2.4v to get it. If I can't get this system 8GB stable I guess I could put it in the wife's E6400 P5W DH 2x1GB 677 system, but then I have 2GB of Patriot 677 RAM on my hands and no other systems to put it in.

But yeah...I do a decent amount of rendering with this machine and really enjoy the 8GB so I would love to get it stable at 3.2GHz with 8GB.

Small recap since I didn't really say it before...

    With the above settings...

    4GB Prime95 stable blend for 12 hours 45 minutes (I stopped testing)

    8GB Prime95 1 ERROR blend for 5 hours 30 minutes (0.5 expected 0.4 error)

8GB Prime95 no additional errors other than the above at 9 hours 45 minutes

Well, that sounds like you almost have it stable then with 8GB, 9 hours is a good long time.

Do you have a fan on the ram, it could help if you could rig one up.

Why such High Vcore, Vtt, and PLL for a 3.2 overclock? What is your actual Vcore under load with that setting? You should leave CPU Ref in Auto for now, and MCH Ref that way as well unless you specifically setup the MCH Ref and did so properly (Meaning not just set it randomly or to what you saw in the BIOS)

    tWTR..........................................Auto - 3 << Set 4 for now
    tWR............................................Aut o - 6 << Set 8 for now
    tRFC...........................................Aut o - 52 << Set 82 for now, 5x is way to low for 8GB

    tRTP...........................................Aut o - 3 << Set 4
    Command Rate (CMD) ....................:Auto - 0 << Set 2

    Driving Strength Profiles
Driving Strength ............................Auto << Have you tested both 800 and 1066?
