    Post P35-DQ6 + Kingston PC8500 not running at 1066

Hi all, Im a total overclocking n00b, so please be gentle on me. Let me first tell my system specs: Gigabyte GA-P35-DQ6 4 x 2 GB Kingston HyperX PC8500 5-5-5-15 1066 mhz Intel Q6700 Geforce 8800 640 GTS Today i replaced my 'old' 4GB Kingston hyperX 800Mhz with some new 8GB Kingston HyperX 1066MHz memory. Since i wanted to see it worked i installed cpu-z, and got the following (for me strange) results i might say: CPU: Recognizes the Q6700. But: Core voltage 1.152 ~ 1.136 Core speed 1600 Mhz? Keeps changing btw 1599.9 ~ 1600.1 Multiplier 6x Bus speed 266.7 MHz Rated FSB 1066.7 MHZ cores: 4 Memory: Max Bandwith: PC2-6400 (400mhz) timings: 5-5-5-18 voltage 1.8V I presume this all aint normal, anyone can give me a hand on this ? btw the forum doesnt seem to work properly so sorry for the post layout, having troubles here on the forum with IE7, IE8 and FF3 ...

What does CPU-Z say for DRAM:CPU ratio?
I only recently found out about this 'divider' myself. My DDR2 800 was working at 716MHz.
Also, what is the expected (regular) Q6700 Ratio x FSB rating? Sorry, I don't know Intel cpus.

Hi, tnx for the reply. To bad i'm @ work now and cant check the settings, but a friend told me today that the cpu should be fine. It shifts down to slower speeds when idle. So nothing to worry about. Now all i need to fix is get the memory running it 1066, but i think i'd need some correct settings for that to run 4x2 gb ddr2 - pc8500

I don't have much experience with CPU-Z but I thought it shows the max CPU speed disregarding any shifting down. Can someone answer this please?
From what I learned playing with my memory recently, it might work on lower freq on Auto settings.
It seems CPU-Z is showing your FSB at 266MHz which sounds OK. You have to check whether the 6x multiplier was due to shifting down or not, why isn't it 10x as supposed. At the end of the day, you can set the clock/cpu setting to Manual in BIOS and set them yourself as 266MHz and 10x cpu ratio.
Concerning the memory, the first step would be to set the memory freq also to Manual and see if that will make it work at 1066MHz. Depending what your BIOS looks like you will either have a setting DDR 1066 to select or a multiplier of your FSB, in that case you are probably looking for a 2x multiple which makes your mem freq 533MHz or double data rate of 1066MHz.
All of this is manual settings without any OCing. After sorting these 'default' values you might want to try some light OCing.

    Tnx Kantona,

The cpu-z indeed shows the 6x multiplier and 'strange' CPU speed while its idle only, so i guess its actually the processor slowing down because its idle anyway. I noticed a setting about that in the bios also.

Will try some memory settings when i get home (in 3 hours.. damn this day takes long ;) )
All i dont understand is what you mean with the double datarate part. The memory is running in 'dual channel mode' if that has anything to do with it :)

I mentioned the data rate part because you have to be careful with the freq. Even the earlier single channel ram when it moved from SDRAM to DDR was exactly that Double Data Rate. It means your ram freq will actually be 533MHz but the way memory works is doubling up that freq.
So for example, if you find a 2x multiplier in your BIOS for the ram, doubling up your 266MHz base FSB, it can only take your memory up to 533MHz. You will not find a 4x multiple to reach 1066MHz. Actually the 533MHz is 1066.
My DDR2 800 is working at 400MHz. So, when CPU-Z shows you 533MHz or similar for your memory, that means you're where you wanted to be.
PS. I just remembered that actually CPU-Z is showing you both your mem freq and the doubled up value, so it will show you 533 and 1066.

ok i managed to get the system stable again in 2 different ways:

    1. Running the memory @ 1066 mhz with 5-7-7-24 timing
    2. Running the memory @ 800 mhz 5-5-5-18 timing

As soon as i start changing the timings or voltages manually the system becomes unstable. So in the Bios i chose for either Standard performance (5-7-7-24 timings) and put the memory on 1066 mhz, or i chose for Extreme performance (5-5-5-18) and the system will only be stable when i put the memory frequency on 800.

Any suggestios which of the two options is best?

What is the exact model number of the HyperX? The Kingston website has two 4GB kits, one is CL7 offering 7-7-7-20 at 1.85-2.0V and the other CL5 offering 5-5-5-15 at 2.2V.
For this second alternative 2.2V seems high so you might need to raise the voltage manually.
Check their website with the exact model number and the datasheet will tell you the max you can get out of it and the recommended voltage.

PS. You can check the voltage with CPU-Z I think, on the Memory tab. It shows the voltage the memory is operating at. Also timings, freq, etc.

I don't know whether this is your exact memory model but take a look at this PDF spec:
    http://www.valueram.com/datasheets/KHX8500D2K2_4G.pdf
Look at the beginning in the Description section, you will see mentioned standard JEDEC settings, and what are the max (tested and recommended) settings for the memory. Until I started reading these specs I had no idea how to use the memory at max timings. If this is not your exact model just find the PDF spec on the mentioned Kingston website.
Notice in this PDF how the voltage has to be 2.2V as opposed to 1.8V. Auto settings rarely will do that. You will have to switch voltage controls to Manual and set the DDR Voltage as needed.
