    Default GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P + WD Velocipraptor 150 + Vista 64 = HELP!!!

Howdy all. I'm totally stuck and hosed here. Here's the setup:

GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard

    Intel Xeon X3360 Yorkfield 2.83GHz 12MB L2 Cache LGA 775 95W Quad-Core Processor

Western Digital VelociRaptor WD1500HLFS 150GB 10000 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive (bare drive)

    And Vista 64 Ultimate Edition

I can't get Vista to recognize the Raptor no matter what I do. I have the drive hooked into the SATA2_0 slot on the motherboard (the yellow one). In the BIOS system, the ONLY way I can get the BIOS to recognize the hard drive is when RAID/ACHI is disabled, SATA 0-3 is enabled, and onboard IDE is enabled.

Any other settings in BIOS render the hard drive invisible to the BIOS.

I am so totally stuck! This was supposed to be a 1-day deal, and I've been digging through every page of every manual to find an answer (which I haven't obviously). I have downloaded, what I think, are every driver known to man that has to do with this Gigabyte board, and when prompted in the Vista load menu, I've tried to upload them so the drive can be recognized. NOTHING WORKS!!! I'm starting to lose it obviously.

    Please help:( Thanks all!

Are you trying to setup a Raid array?
If not, enabling AHCI for NCQ functionality may not be worth it, as several have posted that the performance increase is minimal at best.

Page 105 in the UD3P user manual specifies the procedure when you are installing Vista. I don't know if there is a way to install these drivers after Vista or XP is already installed.

    Try the forum search using:

    ahci+vista
    or
    raid+vista

Let us know how you make out.

I really wasn't interested in installing AHCI or RAID for that matter. Right now I just want the one drive to cooperate:(

Your HDD is recognized in the bios with RAID/ACHI disabled.
What happens when you boot? Do you get any errors? How far along the boot process can you go.

What is the BOOT ORDER setting in the bios? ---> ADVANCED BIOS FEATURES -> First, Second, Third Boot device.
Do you have a non-booting floppy, cdrom, or usb connected?

Right now the primary boot device is the cd/dvd drive. After that its the harddrive.

If you haven't done so already, go into your bios -> Advanced BIOS Features and DISABLE Full Screen Logo Show. You might see that you're hanging at the VERIFYING DMI POOL message.

    Is your cdrom empty?

You should temporarily set your hard drive to the first boot device to eliminate the possibility of a cdrom problem.

Okay profJim, you were correct. It is totally stalled at the "Verifying DMI Pool Data" message.

I'm still totally stuck with this. I have tried to install the hard drive into another computer and format it that way. No go. It gets pretty close to done, then says 'Windows cannot format this device'. SUCKS!!! I'm still in desperate need of help with this one. If the BIOS can recognize it, the drive is working properly correct? It's not faulty correct? If Vista can't see it, and an existing XP system can't see it, it's got to be a driver right?

Just perform WD Diagnostics on another pc to see if the drive is faulty.

If it fails to format on another machine, i guess its just a faulty drive.

    ^^^ I Agree ^^^

You want Data Lifeguard Diagnostic to test, BUT you may need to run Data Lifeguard Tools first to setup the drive for initial use. Some drives require this and some do not, this sets the drive as active and primary and allows a format to be done if you wish. I would run LifeGuard Tools first and setup the drive for initial use, then run the diagnostics tools to see if the drive is DOA or no. Both of these can be ran on your PC from DOS or from another PC with the HDD Connected in DOS or windows >>>
WD Support > Downloads > SATA Hard Drives > WD VelociRaptor

You did check and remove any jumper found on the drive correct? What settings are you using for these in the BIOS and what ports (Color and #) do you have your drives (CD and HDD) connected to? >>>

    Integrated Peripherals

SATA RAID/AHCI Mode (Intel ICH10R Southbridge) ............. AHCI
SATA Port0-3 Native Mode ................................... Enabled (or Disabled, both will work)

Onboard SATA/IDE Device (GIGABYTE SATA2 Chip) ............. Enabled
Onboard SATA/IDE Ctrl Mode (GIGABYTE SATA2 Chip) ........... IDE
