Thread: GA31M-ES2L<-- Is this OC able?

Thank you sir....I was browsing Newegg's 775 options and some of the best ones are too tall for my CM Centurion case. The left removable side panel has an attached large duct that protrudes into the case over the CPU (to direct hot airflow out the case?) so the large HSF (100mm + height) won't fit unless I remove that panel duct. If it doesn't hurt to remove the duct, I don't care. Otherwise, I'm limited to the stock style push pin coolers....Are any of these stock style coolers worth it?

I'll check out more of those linked coolers when I get back in a couple of hours...But I agree with you, whatever I'm doing I want to do it as right as possible the first time.

EDIT: I also keep coming back to the CM Hyper 212 that seems popular and though it's on the tall side, I'm willing to just pull the panel duct off if the 212 is the way to go. I'd really like to buy something by tonight if possible so if you guys have any other suggestions, let em fly. And again, if any stock style push pin coolers are worth checking out on a sub 3.4ghz OC, feel free to give your honest opinion.

Take care to all, be back shortly

    Jeremy

    You're welcome.
    I would remove the duct
You might be able to install a cooling ran to the side case to improve cooling.
Most fans are only 25mm (1 inch) thick.

Just don't go by the look, some look very pretty but don't cool that great.

Right on, I don't care about looks as the CM Centurion is black steel case, no window shopping lol...I forgot to mention that this case has a side fan just below the large panel duct, 80-90mm I believe and a large 100-120mm fan on the rear near the power supply...

The cooling duct won't really help with a modern cpu heatsink.
There are quite a few highly rated coolers for well under $50.
A 92mm fan setup will be fine for your current setup, but probably won't be adequate in the future if you upgrade your cpu.
I used an Arctic Cooling Freezer Pro rev2 with it's 92mm fan and it was OK with my overclocked system, but I think that you can do better for the same price.
A down draft style heatsink should work well, but these don't usually offer the same cooling performance as an upright cooler with a 120mm fan.
If you are willing to spend about $60 - $70 for a larger, more modern computer case that is on sale, you shouldn't have a problem fitting an upright heatsink that is about 160mm tall.

I just sent him a handful of suggestions, in case he wanted to spend a little more. Hopefully he'll post those here for you guys to further advise him since I'm a water cooler :)

Haha, no I'm a faucet actually!

And ya know what, I was thinking of you when I wrote that too, and actually changed it up to say that instead of "I use water cooling"

Alright guys, for the sake of time, I'm going to order the CM 212 since it seems to be a safe bet for now. I just want to see what I can reasonably get out of this setup since I've rarely used it in the 3 years since I've put it together. I appreciate the myriad of suggestions and will report back once I get the new HS installed. To save time, I'm just going to get some double sided tape to mount the new Heatsink to the cpu to save me from having to remove the motherboard....

    just kidding :)

Have you checked that the HS is seated properly, somtimes one of the push pins pops out.
