Thread: GA31M-ES2L<-- Is this OC able?

  1. #81

Default Re: GA31M-ES2L<-- Is this OC able?

Well I have a crappy update: RealTemp and CPUID show CPU temp to still be 50C degrees! Chassis temp is now 18degrees lol but I just don't get it. I used a credit card to fill in the HSF pipe grooves and pulled every bit back off except what was filled in. Then I applied 2 small strips about 1/3 apart on the bottom of the HSF and bolted it down to the backplate. The first time I checked this method it was nicely covered so I cleaned CPU and HSF and repeated....
    This was using AS5...

    CPUID now shows the following:
    TMPIN2: 16C
    TMPIN0: 73C
    TMPIN1: 70C

From what I read, TMPIN0 is the CPU temp (doesn't make sense as RealTemp says it's 50C) so I shut the PC down until I can figure out what is what...

Double check your cpu core temperatures by running CoreTemp or RealTemp.
What is your cpu fan speed?

Well unless some significant time is needed for breakin, when the computer first booted (no errors, problem free) after about 5 mins I checked RealTemp and it showed 50C degrees. That's why I'm bummed...I tightened the cooler bracket retention screws until they hit their stops since I couldn't find anything to indicate otherwise but there's no overflow of paste either.

I may have to pull it and see what's up.

I'd ask if you removed the protective plastic sheet on the bottom of the heatsink, but you couldn't fill the HDT channels with the protective plastic still attached.

Yeah, removed the plastic film lol...I downloaded coretemp right now and it indicates the same so I'm fixing to pull the HSF and checking for paste contact.

I was correct in only applying paste to the HSF base and then screwing down to the backing plate, yes?

I have the cooler HSF plugged into the mb 'CPU Fan' socket and the rear case fan plugged into the 'Sys Fan' socket. I'm just wondering if things are being read properly.

Also, what if the Bios PC Health shows temp significantly lower? I remember that being the case when checking before OC'ing recently.

Thanks, the above link shows the the Heat Pipe coolers seem to perform better (if not require?) thermal paste to be spread with a card over the heat sink pipes to fill the gaps/grooves and two lines on the cooler heat sink bottom. The pics seem to show that's the best way but if you guys feel otherwise, let me know...
That's the technique that I used, same as described in the BenchmarkReviews link.
Once the cooling tube gaps are filled in and flush with the surface, adding two short grain of rice sized lines should be adequate, side by side near the center of the cpu/heatsink contact area.

Once attached, the heatsink should have no noticeable front/back or side to side wiggle.

AS5 does require curing time, but that should only amount to 2 -3 (C) for maximum cooling performance.

When you tighten the mounting screws, use an X pattern to first tighten each screw finger tight, followed by using the X pattern to fully tighten each mounting screw.

Yeah, I used an X pattern and slowly torqued all screws down. I just pulled the HSF and from what I can see, coverage looks very good to me. I'll post a pic in a minute..

    What do you think?

The PC Health section of the bios should show the cpu temperature and system temperature readings.
Once you're in windows, double check the cpu fan speed.
You might want to try disabling the cpu PWM setting to let your cpu fan run at full speed.
CoreTemp and RealTemp report the same core temperatures IF the Tj max settings are the same.

Coverage area looks good, but the amount of TIM looks like a little too much was used.
There isn't an excess of TIM at the edges, so it might just be due to the low resolution photos.
Reread a few of my most recent posts to make sure that you haven't missed any of my suggestions.
Make sure that you confirm cpu temp in the bios, cpu fan speed, and test the heatsink wiggle or lack there of.
