    re: temperatures

Some TIM (thermal interface material) takes longer to fully set up and reach optimal performance. Arctic Silever5 and others require quite a few heating/cooling cycles to fully cure and reach optimal efficiency. Running your system continuously slows this process. It's possible that you applied too much or too little TIM. At low loads, your cpu is probably using fewer cores. At full load, all cores are probably being used and the temperature variation between cores would be lower. As long as the temps are reasonable, don't worry.

    re: cdrom booting

Both my systems use IDE cdroms and boot fine. Check the instructions and verify that your cdrom doesn't require a specific jumper setup.

Just a qwik extra on the temps,in the I wouldnt worry about variations too much vein.
My cpu has allways read that way on all utilities since I got it.
The first cpu hs i used was one that was on my D820 (it looked better than the Q8200 one),
I had that on and off the cpu a lot.I was tring "pad mods " on the processor different paste application methods n all sorts of weirdness.

There are posts about quad temp core variations if you check it out,on google etc.
People who are worried about it,but its fairly common.
Some get all 4 cores reading the same ,some get variations.
There are theories about "stuck sensors" etc and recalibration on utilities like realtemp.

Ive never had my cooler off the cpu since I got the cooler,3 months now(good job too cos itd be a pain to remove).
If Id never run the cpu before that Id be worried it wasnt seated properly or something,as it is tho..Im not really worried because of previous testing.
Core 0,or Core 1 depending how you look at it is the only one that reads hotter than the rest and I think of it as the "safety" valve.
I get a 10 degree max variation between the first and 4th core at high temps, had first core at 71 once core 4 was 61.
At standard (unclocked) cpu under load my core 1 was 57 core 4 was 47 ..that kind of thing.

    Thanks Jim,

I have the LG SATA dvd-writer and there's no jumpers on it. I just tried hooking it to the Gigabyte/J.Micron Controller but that did not change a thing. I can see it in bios, it is set as IDE primary master, it is the 1st device in boot priority. But whenever I try any of these boot cds - the system doesn't even bother looking for the cd - it checks whats in the floppy( 2nd in priority) and then off to the hdd and loads the OS. Its pretty annoying I can't find whats really causing it.

How did you try to boot from your cd/dvd?
    1) Using F12 to select which device to boot from?
    2) Changing the device boot order in the bios?

Did your boot seem to skip booting from the cd/dvd and continue to boot from the hard drive?

Did you see a "Booting from CD/DVD" message after the "Verifying DMI data" message?

tried both methods a number of times and it makes no difference

yep, it seems to ignore the boot sequence and goes straight to the hdd

no, that's the problem, it says: "Verifying DMI data", but skips the "Booting from CD/DVD" part

Have you tested other bootable disks? Do you burn your own, if so always use the Slowest setting for something you want to boot from or install

In posts #1 and #17 you have:

    Legacy USB Storage Detect ..............[Enabled]

Try disabling it and then booting to your cd/dvd.
Lsdme recommends leaving this disabled unless you need to boot from a usb stick.

Yes I just used an old XP install disk and it was a NO go. I always burn them with the least possible speed. The thing is I tested like 7-6 bootable disks on 3 other machines( 2 laptops and my old desktop ) and they load just fine. It is not the bootable media. It's gotta be something wrong in my setup...maybe it is just the operator

I tried both options, currently I got it "disabled". When the system boots I can see "Verifying DMI Pool Data" and then it loads vista.
