Default Q9550 & UD3R, Noob looking for stable settings, possible overclock later on

    Hi guys,

just finished my first build since 2000 ( athlonXP2000 machine):

    GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3R Rev. 1.1 F6 BIOS
    Core 2 Quad Q9550 SLB8V(Revision E0)
    XIGMATEK HDT-S1283
    OCZ StealthXStream OCZ700SXS
    SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 4830
    G.SKILL 4GB DDR2 SDRAM 1066(PC2 8500)
LG 22X DVDħR DVD Burner/LightScribe Black SATA
Western Digital Caviar Black WD7501AALS 750GB
    Cooler Master RC-690

I'm looking for some stable settings before I go ahead and install OS and test for stability. Here's the changes I've made in BIOS so far. I've used the LSDMEASAP's generic bios template:

How does it look to you guys? The system's been running for 24 hours stable with cpu temp 30-32 degrees and system temp showing 35-38 degrees in BIOS( with the case still open ). I'm not seeking any overclocking for now, well yes but later down the road.

I also have another question since Vista is all new to me - I'm going to install Vista x32 for now with possible dual/triple boot with xp/windows 7. How does partitioning work with Vista on a fresh install with a new hard drive? Do I have to format the HD first and then configure the desired partitions. I'll probably go for 5 partitions:

    1. 3-4 gigs for the Paging file.
    2. 40 gigs for Vista 32.
    3. 20 gigs for XP.
    4. 40 gigs for Windows 7.
    5. The rest 600 gigs for data storage

Woud Vista let me do this during installation or should I wait and setup the partitions after I install the OS?

Well it looks ok,i guess, whats your room temp, what speed are the cpu and system fans running at?

loading and saving optimum defaults should give you stable settings or you can check out threads such as
    http://forums.tweaktown.com/f69/anot...erclock-31304/

The UD3 series settings are all pretty much the same, except the UD3 T if using ddr3 memory.
Vista as far as I know is the low lvl format followed by partitioning disc if you wish.
Leave a space (check your mbrd manual for the size)for the mbrd sys recovery utility.I think it has to be fat 32.
I dont run different os on the same hdd so cant help you on the rest of it.
I have a 160 G hdd with win xp on it if i ever feel the urge to run it again on this setup.
I use virtual machine for win 98,if i get the urge to break out some old games.
Install away tho as long as u have the vista 32 as the main boot on the disc.Dual/triple os boot hdds were allways a pia .Id go for a seperate hdd for each os if i was that pushed.

Room temp is around 25 C. I installed total of 6/120 mm case fans, all running at 1200 rpm. 3 of those are intake and the rest 3 are outtake, I also spent some time on cable management, so the case should get pretty descent airflow now. The Xigmatek's fan is also showing 1200 rpm in bios.

Well I did all these changes because I read that some setting may overvolt the cpu if left on "auto", So, I guess I'm better off just loading the "optimum defaults" for now.

I was just curious how does Vista handle partitioning during initial setup. I'll be getting at least another hdd later on. AAMF, with hdd prices being so cheap I should have orderd two of these 750WD. But for now I wanted to see what other options I had for at least a Vista/XP dual boot.

Thanks for your help, bro, really appreciate it

edit: I forgot to ask also, is it a good idea to flash to the latest bios, F8 I believe? Thanks

Extreme Memory Profile (X.M.P.).....: [Auto] <=== ALWAYS set this to DISABLED. This avoids present and future problems.

    For stock setups:
CPU Vcore............... [Auto] works, I prefer manually setting it to the value displayed to the left of "Auto"
ICH I/O........:1.500V [Auto] works, I prefer manually setting it to the value displayed to the left of "Auto"
ICH Core......:1.100V [Auto] works, I prefer manually setting it to the value displayed to the left of "Auto"

Formatting your hard drive. I always format and partition a new drive to exactly what I want prior to installation. My preference is to set up additional (non o/s) partitions for data, backup, media, etc.

Looks like you're good to go.

    Thanks Jim,

I just edited my last post, asking bout the latest bios flash(prior to OS install). What do you suggest, would that be of any use?

The problem is that I don't have a system that can allow me to hook up and format this new sata hard drive. My old PC only has the old IDE stuff.

Check theLatest Gigabyte Bios sticky for bios info & recommendations.

You can download WD's Data LifeGuard tools to burn a cdrom or floppy to manually partition your new HDD.

I have the WD 640 GB Black hard drive, real good stuff!

Id get it up n running, using either vista ,or possibly xp but you will lose some ram with xp.
Id use the bios that came with it,there is a bios upgrade available for me now,but i have no interest in using it,as the only feedback I have on it is something about ET6 errors being gone.(I dont use ET6)

The "grapevine" responses for bios on UD3 boards up to now have been F4 is the best! for quads, but I dont see much benefit in downing either.
