Default High temps with scythe Mugen 2??

    Hi,

I did install a new cooler, the Scythe Mugen 2, on my UD5/corei7 920

The temps aren't that much lower as I expected.
I have my system running at 3 Ghz now and when running prime95 (torture test) my temps jump to 77/77/78/77 C... so by raising my BLCK to only 140 I have these temps already.

I really did expect the Scythe Mugen 2 to do a much better job...did I do something wrong? I only used a little coolpaste and used my creditcard to evenly spread it around my CPU. The scythe itself is sitting as a house (can't move it at all) so that couldn't be the problem....*sigh* very disappointed

Well if the unit is mounted properly? You got it on okay?
how is the case airflow? and inside cabling neat and out of the way?
Size of a grain of rice I use on 775 ones.

It's all in an Antec P182 which is supposed to be a 'cool' case.
Most of the cabling is hidden so that couldn't be it.

I can't see how I screwed it up. There is really only one way to mount this cooler.
The only thing I can think about is that I used to little or to much paste ... which of the two it is..I don't now
Or the problem is a lack of surface contact (between coolersurface and cpu surface)? If so ..how can I see that and better...how can I correct that?

    thx for any info.

    Hmm..
similar case here well a p180b
does the cpu cooler bolt from back? or push pin like mine arctic freezer?
what is your case fans running at and how many

    here:
got the middle fan(in front of hd pullout) on medium sometimes high
    top on medium
back\rear medium and lower chamber fan blowing towards ps on low.

The cooler is bolted from the back (so a pain the b** to re-mount the cooler). I will play a bit with the fan speed on top/back but when I look at some manuals on the net there are different stories on how to mount a cooler
    - the arctic silver 5 manual talks about a thin line no spreading
    - another puts a blob in the middle and spreading with credit card

I used the last one but I will buy some arctic 5 after all when I plan to re-mount. But will too much coolpaste gives such a bad result??

I usually put like size of a grain of rice of hs compound in center of cpu
then cut off each end of a q tip
leave about an 1 1/4" of round stick to work with in my hand
then just roll it smooth a bit out from the center, BUT not near to the edges and actually let the cooler finish the squish as I attach it
I am using vantec hs stuff right now.
