Ok I set the bios to the the values you posted. It made it to the gigabyte screen at 1.05 volts on the mch but that is as far as it would go.I tried 1.24 1.26 and 1.10 still will not do 1066 dual channel.I'm at a loss here. But it does run great at 800 4 4 4 12.We are going to do some system builds soon and get some g-skill and swap it for the viper and see how that works.
Thanks for your help.Any more suggestions you have I'll try also in the mean time.

Others have had the same problem. Sometimes an RMA with the exact same ram fixed the problem. Some switched brands and that fixed their problem.

Don't be surprised if the Patriot memory works fine in other mobos and that the Geil runs at full speed with your current mobo.

Let us know how your testing works out.

    profJim,

Doesn't this compatibility problem indicate that the EP45-ud3r is a defective design? I personally have 3 sets of memory that at default bios settings were completely unstable on this board. The same memory boots up 100% stable on my ASUS and ECS motherboards. No tweaks. None.
My contacts with Gigabyte support were without any recommendations whatsoever to just send the board in for repair. It seems like this board has a very narrow tolerance for most memory.
One should not have to adjust memory settings to run quality Dram at default system clocks.
Am I missing something? Seems like people put up with a lotta grief "tweaking" when it should be as they say, "plug and play."

So Should I get Geil or G-skill or Mushkin?Or should I be happy with the Patriot at 800 4 4 4 12? I see that most who buy this board are going with the g-skill.My question is am I going to see a big gain with 1066 over 800?

Cool. I might have narrowed down the problem. My psu is an old one, single rail 550 watt. I had to use a 20 to 24 pin atx adapter and an eps12v adapter.so I'm wondering if it just can't keep the power stable enough for 1066?

Single Rail PSU's are best I think, but your adapters may be causing issues?

I know I would not be using a 20 pin PSU on a 24 Pin board so that could be part of your issues but not sure if it would be the whole issue. I also would not use 4 to 8 pin adapter either, sure they both may work but not the best case scenario at all. I would only do it in a pinch if I had a new PSU on the way.

So ya, I do think you should at least get a new PSU with 24pin and 8pin connectors, do go cheap either because your PSU is the single most important part of your system.

    Good luck in deciding!

Your questions are excellent, but there aren't any easy answers. When designing any product, there are always design trade-offs, such as broader support (true plug and play) or higher performance. Cost, quality of components and features play a significant role in the end product.

In a perfect world, all memory would run a rated speeds at stock settings, and we wouldn't have to jump through hoops just to get our systems up and running. My gripe with the design of the EP45-UD3P/R mobos is with the mobo's implementation of the AUTO settings. I still haven't figured out any redeeming features of the "Fail Safe" settings. It's too bad that most (all?) mobo manufactures have tech support departments whose only worthwhile feature is the ability to approve an RMA.

Before purchasing my UD3P, I did a lot of research on mobos and memory compatibility. Believe it or not, the EP45-UD3x boards had fewer issues than similar boards from other manufacturers. Asus makes some fine boards, but their memory compatibility issues were far higher than with similar Gigabyte models.

A lot of my research dealt with memory from different manufacturers. My primary source was the Newegg user reviews (don't laugh!). A lot of the reviewers are by idiots (I'm being charitable here) who don't know what they're talking about. After looking at the big picture, I found that Mushkin had the highest overall postitive ratings, with very few problems. Other brands had products which were close in overall ratings but had more issues (on a percentage basis).

A manufacturer's memory QVL (Qualified Vendor List) is next to worthless; all it tells me is the limited number of memory models that they've tested. There are too many memory offerings for any manufacturer to test with each motherboard model.

For me, cost was not an issue. I couldn't see trying to save $10 with memory that didn't appear to have the broadest compatibility.

The only way I know of that will give you 100% compatibility is to buy a complete system from one of the big boys. The downside here is that customizing and overclocking will be severely limited.

Thats funny I always check out the Newegg reviews.THe only reason I have the patriot is because I purchased it for my previous build. When I got the motherboard I already knew I might have problems with it.I kept my fingers crossed,it didn't work.In the reviews most are buying the g-skill and it seems to be working pretty good. But first I'm upgrading my psu, then for my b-day maybe a gtx275.I think I'll do the memory last since it is really working great. No crashes at all.I do appreciate all your help and this is a great learnig experiance Thank You.
