Thread: OCZ Reaper + EP45-DS4 won't function.

    Default OCZ Reaper + EP45-DS4 won't function.

    I recently bought 4 1GB sticks of OCZ Reaper Edition PC2 9200 to put in a GA-EP45-DS4 Rev 1.0.

    I was under the impression that i could just install the ram and the mobo/bios would do the rest but that doesn't seem to be the case. I get massive stability problems when i try to use this ram in anything other than single channel (and that's only 2GB). With two sticks, one in slot 1 and the other in slot 3 the computer just keeps resetting even before you reach the BIOS screen. With all four sticks in the PC gets to the point of windows and then resets straight away.

    I have checked the compatibility list for ram on this mother board and the reapers are there so i don't get it.

    I have also noticed that there are quite a few other threads about gigabyte board being problematic with dual channel. Quite often it seems to be rectified by BIOS settings but i have no clue which ones i need to change.

    On the ram itself it says - 5 5 5 @ 2.10v-2.30v. I am vaguely familiar with these settings but i don't know which voltage that refers to or whether i am even supposed to mess with these settings to get the ram to work. Shouldn't the 'auto' setting work?

    I have memtested all the ram and it's fine and other ram works ok dual channel in the board so presumably the board is ok too. I have updated all the drivers for the board and the bios is up to date as well.

    Any help greatly appreciated.

    Update: i have tried setting dram voltage to 2.1 volts and no change and 2.12 and still no change. The BIOS automatically sets the timings to the suggested 5 5 5. Also CPUID seems to say the ram is running at 1066 when it's 1150??

    CPU-z shows a SPD Tab and a memory tab, be sure you are looking at the memory Tab to see the actual speed you are running. If it says 1066 then that is what you are running

    For 4GB you need to make several changes so that may be why you are having issues

    Please try to get the PC Going in dual channel with 2 sticks, use slots 2+4 if you have to, then give me your full settings and I can advise back.

    Be sure you are using Optimized Defaults, not fail safe. Put Performance Enhance on standard and set ram voltage to 2.2 for now, be sure tRFC is set to 58-64 for now as well. Set MCH Voltage to 1.2-1.24 and you should then be able to run all 4 sticks

    If no luck, of course I can advise but you need to get dual channel working first. You are correct I see dual channel issues alot with these boards, normally latest BIOS helps, but sometimes you do need to RMA for a new board

    Hi, thanks very much for the reply,

    I have managed to get this working dual channel using slots 2 and 4 with only 2 sticks. I thought i had tried this already but possibly not. i loaded optimzed defaults before and that may have changed something.It seems to be stable but i havn't tested it much yet.

    In the memory tab of CPUID it says 533mhz and below that FSB:DRAM 1:2 so i presume that means i'm getting 1066?? which is strange as this is definitely 1150 ram. another thing think i should mention is that i have updated the bios but using @BIOS and i see on this forum that it's not recommended. Also i can't find a way of changing tRFC. I havn't attempted 4 sticks yet.

    Anyway i have attempted to fill in the template

    welcome to the world of the forced system multiplier. your choices are 2x fsb, 2.4x fsb, 3x fsb and one more 3.4x fsb I believe. The board often just tries to pick the closest one it can match your ram to.

    If its doing it wrong, the only solution may be to downclock your memory and run at something like a 333mch latch and 2.00b sys multiplier. If you can run stably at a low speed, then you know at least the ram is working and its the settings the board is is using.

    Minor tweaks to your timings and subtimings isn't going to change anything. If anything, it'll probably make things worse.

    Yes, 533 in the Memory Tab of CPI-z mean you are running 1066

    To run 1150 you have to overclock as you need at least a FSB of 383 to run 1150 using the 3.00A mutli or 460 FSB using the 2.50A multi. Using the B multi you would need 480FSB using the 2.40B multi or 360 FSB using the 3.20 Multi. Or using 400+ FSB you could also use the D Strap and run 430 FSB with the 2.66 Multi

    You need to set your ram voltage to spec, 2.1-2.3V Try setting 2.2 for now. Then set MCH Core Voltage to 1.20-1.24

    Ok a lot of this is going over my head ;D.

    Let's leave the overclocking for the moment and settle for 1066.

    I have changed tRFC to 60 and static tRead to 7 for both channels.

    for channel b timing settings it won't let me set trd/twd to auto, i can only put in numbers. the others in this section i have out to auto and in channel a i can out them all to auto.

    i am hesitant about changing the dram voltage to 2.2 as i tried that before and immediatley got alarm on start up but i will try that soon.

    Zero (0) Is Auto for the ones you say you can only enter a number value, that works and or some will/may also have auto at the top of a scroll list. But you can always, with NumLock on, just enter zero/0 and it will set Auto

    Well you can use 2.1V I just suggested 2.2v cause your ram is spec'd to 2.3. 2.0-2.1V should be fine anyway at 1066.

    If you get many fast beeps then your timings are likely incorrect, try raising tRD (Static tRead Value) to 8

    Ok i have all the settings as you have said and it seems to be working.

    It's a bit nervewracking as it seemed to reset twice before actually booting.

    Looking in cpu-z memory it says timings are 5 7 7 24 which is different from the 5 5 5 14 it was before.

    So now should i try putting in the other two sticks?

    The latest on this situation is that i turned the pc off for an hour or so and when i turned it back on ust now it's gone back to resetting itself every few seconds and doesn't get anywhere near the bios screen.

    This is starting to drive me nuts - i thought the whole idea with ram was that you could just plug it in.

    Look, I suggest you actually underclock your ram to start with. You don't need to run it at the max rated speed, especially if you're not overclocking and are just trying to get your system up and running.

    Instead go with a 333 latch and a 2.00 b multiplier and see if you can have stability. Then work from there. You want to first establish if you have a bad stick or if its a compabitility issue. If you can underclock the ram and run it stably with no problems, most likely its a timing/compatibility issue. If you can't then you have a bad stick somewhere and need to problem solve.
