Default Does any memory work with the UD3P?

Like so many other new posters here I am finally at wits end.

    Here is my setup.

    Intel Core 2 Duo E8600 LGA775
    EP45-UD3P F6
    Corsair CM2X2048-8500C5D PC2-6400 2 2G
    BFG Tech BFGEGTX2801024CXE GeForce GTX 280 1GB 512-bit GDDR3
    Western Digital VelociRaptor WD300HLFS 300GB
    Antec NeoPower 650 Blue 650W

    Running Vista

Initial setup went ok, ran all default BIOS settings. PC seemed to work fine for about 2 weeks. Woke up one morning to find it in a continual boot cycle (power on, power off, power on, power off, etc.). Narrowed it down to a stick of ram. RMA'd it to newegg and got 2 new ones. Ran fine again for a few weeks then had the exact same problem. This time I was able to run either stick if I only had one in at a time.

Started searching the internet and noted many people with the same problems here. Followed some basic advice from Profjim and lsd. Today I ran memtest86+. I work overnights so I left it on this AM. In the first 10 minutes it already had 10 errors or so. I left it going and came out later to find my wife had powered it off as she thought it was in the boot loop of despair again. Restarted it and now it got several hundred thousand errors in the first minute or so. Funny thing is that I am in windows now on the same PC with the default bios settings.

I tried each stick seperately today and in different slots, same problem with memtest.

So, after that giant wall of text here are my questions.

    1. Is it possible I just have a bad board? My memory is on the support list from gigabyte. I can't believe it takes so much fiddling with the bios to run it stable.

    2. If you don't think it is the board is there any memory you all can recc?

I am not into overclocking.....yet=) I want a stable PC. This is my second build, it went so smooth I vowed never to buy a prebuilt again. This is making me question that.

    Appreciate all your comments.

I am using Corsair Dominator TWIN2X4096-8500C5DF (2 x 2GB) running stock except for the RAM voltage which I set to 2.1 volts. I actually have two of these sets totalling 8 GB s installed now in the EP45-UD3. I am still using BIOS F4 which came installed. I have yet to find a reason to update. Also using E8500 and a Corsair HW1000 1000 watt power supply.

    CM2X2048-8500C5D isn't PC2-6400, it's PC2-8500 (DDR2-1066)
    http://www.corsair.com/_datasheets/T...96-8500C5D.pdf

Using Default Bios Values is dead wrong. You probably should clear CMOS with a flat blade screwdriver and hold in the ON button of the PC for a few minutes. At minimum you should Load Optimized Defaults (On the Bios Screen) and set Dram Voltage to 2.1V value. For two 2GB sticks -> MCH Core……………....1.2-1.3 (1.24-1.28 likely good enough).

This thread is about a guy using PC2-6400 not PC2-8500.

Bios setting are at the bottom of page 1.

There are a few more threads about that processor, and PC2-8500. I'll see if I can find them tomorrow. Your memory probably is running wrong because of wrong Bios settings.

    Optimized settings?
    Fail-Safe settings?
I didn't load any settings, I used whatever my mobo came with.
Did you change any bios settings?

Most problems with new builds are caused by a few bios settings that haven't been set properly.

Post your bios settings using Lsdme's generic bios template.
Include the following at the beginning of your bios settings:
    cpu = model#
    mobo= model, revision#, bios#
    ram = brand, model#, part#

Be sure to enter AUTO for all settings that are using this setting.
Also include all "normal" values displayed in your bios, such as:
    CPU Vcore...........1.21875V........: [AUTO]
Include a link to your ram's specifications.
Add your system components list to your signature.

**edit** include an Memset screen shot, using the ">>" and SPD tabs. Also include the main screen from cpu-z.

I am using these settings with PC8500 memory running at 1066MHz. I haven't upped my CPU vCore Voltage to run at 4.0GHz, so I'm running 3.33GHz stock. My CPU vCore is 1.216V. System is running strong at these settings.

Your bios was reset during the reboot loop. That's why you have the mobo's default "safe" memory timings 5-7-7-24.

To try and get things stable, you'll need to underclock your memory.
    Make the following changes:

    (G)MCH Frequency Latch...............: [Auto]
    System Memory Multiplier ..............:[2.40B]
    Memory Frequency (Mhz) ..............:800

If this doesn't get your system stable, change the following:
Static tRead Value.............8............:[10] <-- 7 should work at stock speeds

If it still isn't stable, underclock your cpu:

    CPU Clock Ratio ..........................: [10] <-- set to 8

Do you have other memory you can test with?

MCH Core…………….....1.100V...........: [1.26] <-- this looks good, but you might need to try 1.20 - 1.24, or 1.05 settings

Init Display First.......................[PCI] <-- this should be PEG (upper pci-e slot) or PEG2 (lower pci-e slot)

Set MCH core to 1.22 and init display to PEG. Wanted to test these out first before underclocking the mem.

Seems to be working well. Did a memtest and it ran 11 passes with only 1 error. Memtest did the default test, I did'nt change any of the config stuff for it. Is that the right test to run?

Assuming the MCH has stabilized things do I leave things where they are at for a week or so? Should I run a stress test? Any tweaks for now or wait?

    Thanks.

Default Re: Does any memory work with the UD3P?

At stock settings Memtest should have no errors.
Did you run Memtest86+ or Memtest3.x? Others had problems with the 3.x version.

You might need to run Memtest86+ with only 1 memory module at a time to see if there's a problem with only 1 module. If you get errors at standard memory speeds, testing with underclocked memory might test OK. If it tests OK when underclocked, you probably need to RMA the memory.

Even when Memtest86+ passes all tests, you still need to perform additional stress testing to ensure that your system is fully stable.
