Default GA-EX58-UD4P Random restarts - complete crash.

I recently built a Intel i7 920 system on a GA-EX58-UD4P motherboard, from the word go things where going wrong, the system will randomly shutdown for a second or two then restart as if it lost complete power, doing this multiple times would corrupt my copy of Vista 64bit, I've had to reinstall about 6 times. All components are brand new, after the 6th install of Vista everything seemed to work beautifully and operated under stress for a full day then started with the same random restarting, sudden and complete loss of power all across the system for no apparent reason nor pattern. I then decided to Flash my BIOS to the latest F7 which didn't help. I removed everything and rebuilt with no success, after much frustration the GA-EX58-UD4P finally packed up and won't boot anymore, if I press the power button the board lights up for less than a second and shuts down leaving only a green and yellow light shining under the RAM slot, according to the manual indicating a North Bridge voltage error.

I had high expectation for this system however after fighting to keep stability I can't say I'm very enthusiastic about the i7 anymore. I have been reading about similar problems among other GA-EX58-UD4P users, I will have the board replaced tomorrow however what guarantee do I have the new board won't do the same? As a video editor I need complete stability, can't have my system crash during a 10 hour render.

I'm blaming the motherboard however could a brand new 720W PSU, or 6x DDR3 memory play a role as well?
Why is Gigabyte selling an unreliable board like this? I'm losing my confidence in them.

    Hey

I have the same motherboard and mine also restarts, but never in Windows, only when I power on and it has not yet been a problem. I do not know why it restarts - it loses power 1 sec and then lights up. I thought maybe it was my Tagan 900W Piperock that was the reason, but could it be a general problem with this motherboard! Not read that many post in forums about the UD4P.

I have to say I am very happy with the overclock ability and 4.2 GHz is not a problem with this board if you have great cooling. I am still testing the different settings but so far I am happy with it.

Hope your replaced motherboard will be better - good luck.

Found the problem: The board was short circuiting against a metal pin in the case, however swapped out the board for a GA-EX58-UD4P just to be sure. All working fine now, I also added a 1200W PSU into the equation.

    Hello,

I have the same problem with the same board: I think once a day, in Windows it shuts down like there is no power (although it is powered up by an UPS). Then, after a few seconds, it starts up again like nothing happened. The boot process is normal there are no errors.

So, should I try to see if there is a short on the board or should I RMA the MB?

I think it has something to do with the fact that the board is overclocked. When you change a BIOS setting in the M.I.T. (Motherboard Intelligent Tweaker) that has to do with voltages, MHz or similar, after you save the settings to CMOS, the board will power off, then back on and boot. At least mine does like that.

updating to the latest bios will help with double boots, and always use the brass stand offs when fixing the motherboard to the case, use as many as you can to prevent shorting, also it may double boot if you mak an error with bios settings it will need to boot twice to recover the backup bios onto the main bios as the board is dual bios chipped

It has the latest BIOS. I will try to remove the board from the case and put it on a wooden suport and let it run to see if that happens.
Also, I've read that the EIST and C1HALT must be DISABLED in BIOS. I have them ENABLED.

I'll get back when I have more news...

it should work without removing from the case but its worth a try, aslong as youve fitted plenty brass stand offs beneath the motherboard it will be fine, and i have c1e and eist enabled too @3.8ghz what cpu speed are you at and ram/cpu/qpi volts are you using? also what ram timings and rated speed?

what do you mean ups?? and is it entering sleep state? where if you move mouse it will come back on? or complete shut down and re-booting?

I'm at work now so I cannot give you the voltage and so on.
If it helps: the board, CPU and other are not overclocked. They work on the default settings.

The CPU is i920@2.66GHz and the RAM is: 3 x 1GB DDR3 Kingston 1333MHz with default timings.
