Thread: Can't Select Boot Device

  1. #1

    Default Can't Select Boot Device

If I try to select the boot device using the pre-post option of the BIOS, the computer gets stuck on the floppy device and won't accept any input from the keyboard. I have to hard reboot and turn off the power supply to boot up again (the first time this happened I thought I had corrupted my BIOS with a bad flash, but this was not the case).

I had a floppy device in the system which I decided to remove (I successfully used the legacy USB device for flashing the BIOS). Is it possible that I need to reset the CMOS?

BTW selecting the boot device from inside the BIOS itself works fine, it's just if I use the pre-post option (F12 or something).

    F-12 selects the boot device(s)

Do you have a usb keyboard and mouse? Are then enabled in the bios?

If they are not they certainly should be.

Your floppy drive is removed ?

You disabled the floppy drive in cmos?(in standard cmos features)if you removed it?

AND if you have a keyboard with an f lock key, you have press f lock key physically to provide the f1-f12 keys availability on boot

some ms keyboards have them on the right.(Just something to watch for)

I'll try enabling legacy USB keyboard/mouse, but the keyboard does work in the BIOS, so it seems odd that this would be the problem.

I'm pretty sure I disabled the floppy in the BIOS, but I'll check to make sure.

    Floppy drive is completely removed.

No flock key on my keyboard.

So, I'll try enabling the legacy usb keyboard support and see if that does it.

well even if it doesn't fix the problem and I have absolutely no idea how you got to that problem....

IF you have a usb keyboard and usb mouse it most definitely should be enabled in cmos.

I never have many problems BUT I set to what I use(have-enable ) and do not use(don't have-disable).

If you run the system from a cold boot with even the status of the unit in dos displayed before the dmi pooling screen you can notice certain things.

Okay, you were right, yes, I didn't have the legacy usb keyboard support, and the floppy was still enabled. I took care of those two things and everything works great now. Thanks!
