    Default EP45T-DS3R - crashes at 1333Mhz

    Hi there,

I have tried and tried to sort this out by reading posts and tweaking settings here and there, but am still having crashes and really need some help. My setup:

    EP45T-DS3R (f4a)
    Intel Core2Duo E8400 3Ghz
    2GB Corsair XMS3 PC3-10666 (1333MHz)
    ATI HD4670 Powercolor 1 GB
    Seagate ST3250410AS 250GB SATAII 7200rpm 16MB Cache
EZ Cool 600W SLI Ready PSU
    Windows Home SP3
If I run at my E8400 at 3Ghz, and the memory 1066Mhz, (all settings on AUTO), there's no problems at all.

However if I try to run at the E8400 at 3.6Ghz (which I have been told it should be able to) and the memory at 1333Mhz, Windows loads up okay, but I always get crashes in any program/game (Firefox, VLC, as well as Office, or Crysis, Fallout, etc etc).

Any idea what I might be doing wrong? Do you think it's the power supply, is it compatibility issues with Corsair XMS3 or the HD4670?

I'll post my BIOS setting next...

Thats all my settings and an overview of the problem so far - if you need any more info, please do tell. I'm running the latest ATI Catalyst drivers, Direct X 9.0c, and the BIOS f4a (I upgraded it because I thought it was the culprit, but no change)

The main reason why I want to run at 1333 is to make actual use of DDR3 memory after all, and because I've been told that runnning my E8400 CPU at 3.6Ghz would be a good idea if I want to play GTA4 which is quite demanding.

Any help / insights very welcome...

Many E8400 owners are running their systems at or near 4.0 GHz.
It's unclear from your posted bios settings which ones are manually set and which are using AUTO settings.

See this post for several minor tweaks that help with system stability.
Be sure to apply the recommendations for listing your hardware in your signature and include a link to your ram's specs.

Post your bios settings for your 3.60 Ghz setup.

Are you using 2x1GB or 2x2GB ram?

    Thanks for the speedy reply!

I've actually used that post for minor tweaks - spent a lot of time rebooting (and am thankful for the dual BIOS - thought I had bricked my board a few times)

Made changes to my signature and hyperlinked to my RAM info, I am using 2 x 1 Gb. Also posted the 3.60Ghz setup ..fingers x

    Legacy USB Storage Detect ..............[Enabled]

This setting is known to cause problems with overclocked systems.
The only reason it should be enabled is if you NEED to boot or flash from a USB drive. In windows, your system will still recognize and access USB drives with this setting disabled.

    Post a screen-shot that includes:
Memset using the SPD and ">>" panels
    cpu-z main screen
EasyTune6 using TUNER tab --> Advance tab --> VOLTAGE tab

Increasing MCH Core to 1.50 volts might help with stability. <-- this should have said 1.20 volts & resulted in the system reset in the following post

Hi profJim, and thanks for your help with this

    Here's a wee update:

    • Legacy USB Storage Detect ..............[Enabled] -- I set it to [Disabled] actually, that was a typo, sorry!
    • Increased MCH Core to 1.50

Still no improvement - instead of crashing and returning to windows, system resets itself instead (tried Crysis Warhead, Fallout3, Office Onenote)

    I've attached a screenie with Memset/cpu-z/EasyTune6:

Excellent screen-shot, it tells me what I need to know.

Some of the AUTO settings are causing your grief:
Cpu Termination and Cpu PLL should NEVER use the AUTO setting when over-clocking.
Set Cpu Termination to 1.20 or 1.22 for now.
Set Cpu PLL to 1.50 or 1.57 for now.

Cpu Vcore = 1.28 - 1.32 should work, higher is not always better.

MCH Core = 1.20 is usually the minimum required with 2x2GB of 8500 or higher memory speeds. 1.24 - 1.28 usually works best, but some memory will only work at 1.05 volts.

Set Static tRead Value = 7 for both memory channels.

If these changes don't help, under-clock your memory by using the 2.40B or 3.20B memory multipliers.

The best format for posting your settings to use this format to avoid confusion:

    CAS Latency Time..............9..........: [9]
    Static tRead Value.............7..........: [Auto]
    CPU Vcore...............1.25000..........: [1.27500]
    CPU Termination.......1.200..............: [1.22]
    CPU PLL..................1.500..............: [1.50]

The "normal" values displayed in the bios are not always the actual settings that are being applied when AUTO is used. This is why some settings should be manually entered, even if it's the same as the normal value.

note: I haven't personally worked with DDR3 memory, but I'll be checking out DDR3 setups for general guidlines.

    profJim you're a real pro - it's success! System runs stable @ 1333Mhz @ 3Ghz:

    Attachment 1018

However if I try and set the bus at 400Mhz the system wont start - so no 3.6Ghz yet, might have yet more tweaking to do... if you have any tips, they'd be v. welcome

    Thanks so far tho!
