    Default E8400, GA-EP45-UD3R, HyperX 1066: Wanting to get 500MHz FSB stable

    So I've been trying to find stability in 1000MHz since my mem can do 1066MHz. When I first got the machine together I used 'Intel Burn Test'. At 3GHz 1.275vcore, 10 passes on the CPU using max memory possible, passed test. I than tested the memory with Memtest86+, two hours for the first test, with a second 24 hour test to check stability, passed.

    After two weeks of having the machine, keeping it on 80% of the time, I had two incidents of 'c2d'. One with Firefox while streaming video, the other while playing Battlefield2. The machine has not yet locked up or given a BSOD.

    Since those two incidents I decided to test with Prime95 and memtest. Both are giving errors! Prime95 errors on blend, have not tried small/large FFT (I was told 'IBT' does a better job than orthos/prime95/others when it comes to CPU error testing). I gave memtest a default test(8MB) and also a test using 128MB, both test failed within 10 to 15 minutes.

    After my findings with Prime95 and memtest I went back to my 800MHz default settings(stable) and tested each stick with memtest. Each stick tested for 5 hours had received no errors. Tested both sticks together for 5 hours with memtest and received no errors.

    After reading one particular thread, I can see that some of my voltages are not correct for keeping 1000MHz stable. What do you suggest 'Lsdmeasap'? ...So glad I found this thread and yourself, I was having a hard time finding answers to setting up the FSB properly using 1066MHz or 1000MHz @ 1:1.

    Since my MCH voltage is only 1.4(EasyTune6), I was going to up the voltage while waiting for a reply. Being I don't know were to start on the voltage, I'll go with what you told the other gentleman earlier, MCh 1.6v, who has close to my same system.

    On this test I raised the MCH core to 1.5.
    I raised my memory to 2.3v.
    CPU 'PLL' and 'termination' were left at Auto.
    As you can see the test failed on Worker#2(?), when yesterday, without switching the memory around, the test failed on worker#1.

    Heres the settings I use for my E8500 C0. I can run 500FSB to 520FSB stable and run some 2D benchmarks at 550FSB. Do not use over 1.57v PLL, 1.4v CPU termination, 1.4v MCH, 1.45vcore.

    AUTO must NEVER be used for some settings while over-clocking. EasyTune6 shows that both of these are way too high. Set CPU PLL = 1.50 - 1.57 volts.

    MCH/ICH
    MCH Core…………….....1.100V...........:Auto //Reads 1.4v in EasyTune6.

    ICH I/O……………….....1.550V............: Auto
    ICH Core…………...……1.100V............: Auto
    With 2x1GB 1066 memory, MCH Core = 1.20 - 1.24 should work (1.05 -1.15 might be needed). Too much or too little MCH Core causes instability.

    I distrust AUTO settings for all voltage settings (Reference volts are OK). Even though ET6 values are OK for both ICH settings, I still set mine manually.

    At 500 MHz you have a substantial cpu over-clock.
    To test your memory's limits, use the 2.400B memory multiplier with cpu frequencies from 420 - 460 MHz.
    You can also test with 333+ MHz and use the 3.20 multiplier.

    I just noticed your follow up post....
    Don't set voltages when you don't know exactly what you're doing!!!

    You're right, I'm not exactly sure what I'm doing. This is my first OC and this board I picked has way more options than I know about.

    Is there a paticular route that one must go in order to get the voltages proper. I did see in another thread, something about the percentage of one voltage will tell you how far to raise another voltage option? I'm having issues finding it again, however. Got a link for something like that?

    So far, I was able to set the MCH to 1.20 and machine booted, have not tested yet.
    I tried to set the 'CPU Termination' to 1.28 - 1.22 and failed to boot.

    There aren't any quick and easy settings, just guidelines for suggested settings. To further complicate things, you and I could have identical hardware setups, but that doesn't mean that the same settings on both systems would work the same.

    Don't worry about the formula where voltage X = 63% of voltage Y.
    This is an advanced setting that is not usually needed.

    Setting CPU Termination = 1.20 volts should work.

    Fatguy1992 has an E8500 that is oc'd higher than your E8400.

    Don't exceed 2.20 volts for your memory, that is its max rated voltage.

    I just noticed that you're running 6 x 500 MHz.
    If your goal is to first find your memory's limits, this can more easily be done with using near stock cpu settings and then making minor adjustments. On my system, using the 2.40B system memory multiplier, I found:
    7 x 459 MHz, memory speed = 1102
    is as far as I could go. You might be able to go higher because you have a higher cpu multiplier than my 7x limit.

    An easier way to find your memory's limits is to keep your cpu near stock levels and "push" your memory's speeds by using different system memory multipliers while keeping your cpu well within its limits.

    The trouble with your approach is that you're increasing cpu and memory speeds "equally". The maximum (unstable) speed that I can boot with is about 526 MHz (cpu) and this would only let me test my memory at 1052 MHz, 5% under its maximum speed. I don't know the limits of your memory.

    The highest stable cpu/memory speed combination does not guarantee that you'll have the best overall system performance. Bragging rights? Yes.

    Thank a bunch for the help fatguy and profJim, you helped me get 1000MHz stable and with a good outcome. I'm not failing the Prime95 anymore. I also was able to lower my vcore to 1.275. I'll do some more testing later to see if I can get my vcore and DRAM voltage[2.2] lower. I know the timings can be tightened too, but I was just trying to get it stable first and my big issue was not understanding the memory voltages(DRAM Termination and Reference).

    Really, thanks a lot you guys, you showed me what I was missing!

    What I found out my initial problem was that I didn't have my DRAM Termination, Channel A Reference and Channel B Reference properly configured. Default [Auto] for A/B Reference is 0.900 and default DRAM Termination is 0.900. These values are for memory operating at 1.8v DRAM Voltage. My DRAM Voltage is 2.2, so I needed to set my Termination and Reference values to half my 'real' DRAM Voltage(2.2/2=1.1)

    Hey, thanks for the tip. for about 15 minutes I had it at 2.3, but others have said that little amount of time wont degrade the memory. I turned it back down though. With some further testing I'll hopefully get the DRAM Voltage down to 2.1, with subsequent DRAM Termination and A/B references that follow.

Did that stay at 1:1? call me a stickler, read that it's best to stay at a ratio of 1:1 until you get the machine stable. Than once I've got the memory and vcore stable, then it is ok to go 3:4, 5:6, 6:8 and so on. Now that I believe the memory voltages are correct and the machine appears to be stable with testing both CPU with 'IBT' and testing the memory with memtest and Prime95 with no failures as of yet, it should be ok to move the FSB out of sync!?!?? Thing is though, I'm not really trying to go to far with this machine because I'm trying to keep it silent. So in order to keep the fan noise down i want to keep voltages down to keep heating down. With 98% load only going to 51-52c there is still a little bit of room to do .500*7=3.5 on air. I expect that I'll have to go to 1.325vcore for 3.5GHz. That might take it up to 58c at 98% load, which is still acceptable using 4x120mm 5v fans. Really, I'm pretty surprised! While trying to make this machine ultra silent I thought at these speeds the system temp would be much higher!

    Well, I guess I am trying to get as close as I can with the speed the manufacturer said the chip would run, 1066MHz. Everything I put in this machine works very well on default, but that is only 800MHz with everything on auto. Sure it would pass Prime95 after only doing 5 hours of testing, but I didn't buy 800MHz modules, so I guess I wanted to at least be close to what I payed for. Being new[newb] at overclocking and building PC's on my own I was just like "wow, I want a 1066MHz machine", which is a major improvement from my old AMD 3500+ 400MHz machine.

    I would not say I'm doing this for bragging since I wont top out this machine. But if it came down to it, i would like to say "look how fast, quiet and cold it is, on air"!

    Now that I have it stable however, I can have this setting saved in BIOS and start messing around with different multipliers and FSB. Only after I put it through a full night of Prime95. Once that is done, I'll see if those higher voltage values for CPU/MCH Termination and A/B References I'll let yo know the results of that tomorrow.

    So I found that I can boot with CPU Termination at 1.34, any lower and machine does not post. However, I have not tested stability yet!

    EDIT: So now I'm at 1.28Vtt/1.750 MCH Ref. Should i start testing from here?
