Thread: GA-EP45-UD3P - Won't boot with 450FSB

I can run IBT & OCCT Limpack all day long but Prime Large spits out my computer and laughs at it with my current 550x8 settings
IBT & OCCT Linpack stresses the CPU alot but doesn't stress the NB as much. Prime Large & OCCT Large both stresses the NB more. Your NB was probably unstable, not your CPU.

With all possible respect, you obviously haven't seen much. It's perfectly ok.
FYI, I use OCCT, Prime95 & IBT to stress my overclocks. Look in my sig. I can honestly say that Prime95 is the easiest to run without getting errors. Which programs do YOU use to stress? I saw your post where you asked whether it's a good idea to stress with OCCT or not, so I'm guessing you never used OCCT?

    Keep it friendly guys.

Everyone has their favourite stress test. One they have found the hardest to pass. For me it's also Prime Large FFT and OCCT large data set (essentially the same but with minor differences ofc). Those two are evil personified (or softwarified). A MCH ref adjustment is usually required if it fails, but I've also had times where Vcore needed to be raised too.

As mentioned previously in this thread, something like WinRAR or WinZip, extracting a large (4-8GB) file/iso and a large (4GB+) archive of smaller files is a good way to test the memory sub system, MCH and L1 & L2 cache.

In my experience IBT is only useful to me as a cooling check. I've had 50 iterations pass with max RAm used and gotten errors in Large FFT/Large data set. I'm sure for others though, it can be tough to pass. It all depends on your hardware, and how you have it configured. It's conceivable that you can get the same equipment "almost stable" in different ways. One tool reveals the weakness when configured one way and visa versa.

I don't know the mechanics of all the stress-test tools but back in the day, all we had was Prime95 for the longest time. The vast majority of the time, if I was able to run Prime blend for 24 hours with no errors, I would never get a BSOD when using said rig. I've had the occasional BSOD from graphics drivers but we're talking 1 crash in a year. The only other testing tool that's been around for a while is memtest86, good old floppy days.

    Prime95
    Orthos
    OCCT
    IBT (maybe)

They all run very similar tests, does anyone know the strict differences?

When I see someone post something like "you obviously haven't seen much, it's ok", it really upsets me... I have used OCCT, Prime & IBT for a long time, and I only say things based on my personal experiences, as well as what I've read on XtremeSystems and Anandtech forums.

imo, if you don't use ALL 3 programs OCCT, Prime, IBT, then you really shouldn't tell someone that he "haven't seen much".

It was the "You haven't seen much" comment to which my statement was directed. However it wasn't meant in a hostile way, I just wanted to convey that there should be tollerence given to everyone's opinion.

I respect both your opinion creamsoda, and octopus's. We have an excellent resource thread here, and it would be a shame for it to degenerate into a vigorous statement of opinion. Opinion is always welcomed ofc, but everyone has their own preferences and beliefs.

It's not that people "Haven't seen much" it's that they've all seen different things. All of these things can point to a logical conclusion that doesn't necessarily tally with someone else's experience.

Back on topic, I have often wondered if combining F@H (Folding at Home) GPU and SMP CPU clients would be a good stability test. I personally only runthese when the system is 100% stable though. I would definately not want to pass on potentially faulty folding info, and mess up a cure for cancer etc.

@grishkafool: Does the BIOS still have all its options for voltage settings (VTT, MCH ref, CPU ref etc) when you fit a P4? I'm not really sure how reference volts etc effect that architecture, and the requirements that Netburst demands. Is it HT enabled? If so you could always cheat and disable it.

Prime Large failed (AGAIN ) on one core after almost 4hrs, I have just upped the VTT one notch to 1.34 and are now re-testing. Hopefully tonight I will have time to update the template too for you viewing pleasure and delight

I love to see how others stress test, it helps me develop better testing.. I had never thought of using zip on huge zip files.. awesome idea!!

Basically this is what I am doing...

    1) Prime95 blend (12+ hrs) while playing random UT3 games
    2) IBT standard 20 loops
    3) Prime95 small inplace FFT (8+ hrs) while playing random UT3 games
    4) IBT large 10 loops
    5) Prime95 large inplace FFT (12+ hrs) while playing random UT3 games (This one is the one that fails the most for me)
    6) IBT standard 30 loops with prim95 blend going.
    7) OCCPT large dataset (9 hrs)
    8) All new Zip file from hell!! will make a 3-10 G with Prime95 blend

UT3 is great to help pass the time.. and to watch for texture tearing/shearing.. or sound glitches. Every time I have gotten one, a failure was only hours away. IMHO most people test the memory, FSB and CPU.. but leave out other subsystems like sound and graphics which will also reveal failures in the form of odd sounds or textures being wrong. These subsystems also access memory, etc.. and are sensitive to issues.

I LOVE the graphs that OCCPT makes of temp and voltages.. 3.3, 5, and 12volts measurements should not vary more then 3-4%.. more and it may be the source of your issues. again IMHO, but I am also speaking from experience.

This is my method, and it works well for me. The gang here rocks and I have learned a huge amount... I am having trouble using this knowledge for good and not evil.. but that's another issue...

I base my judgements on what I see here. If two guys doing insane OC pass all tests BUT Prime95 which gives them errors, I logically don't believe someone elses statement that Prime95 ignores errors or something along such lines :)

No offense meant either way, though.

It's a really good way to test the NB's stability.

here's what I do, I find 2-3 large files (1-2gb each), then I zip them up. Then make 2-3 copies of the zip file I just made. Then I extract 4 of them at the same time (using winrar). If you don't get an error, then you know your MCH reference has hit the sweet spot.

D-and-W you promised to share your latest project! Come on share with the class!

Today I may try lapping my heatsink. I am waiting for my tube of AS5 to come in the mail. Should be here today.
