    Default EP45-DS3R and Vista64 issues

hello - I'm running an EP45-DS3R mobo with a Q6600 CPU and OCZ RAM (8 gigs). Video card is Gigabyte 8600Gt dual head/fanless, latest drivers.

When I first installed Vista 64, after the "windows loading" and before the round windows logo would appear, Vista would hang to a black screen with a white line at the top of the main monitor. After much tweaking I found that if I slow down the RAM to 667Mhz instead of running at full speed of 800 Mhz, that would fix the issue (I ran memtest and all is well. I also tried different RAM I have and the same issue happens).
With the slowed down RAM, all has been fine for a month.

Last night I installed SP2 and right after the reboot, the hang happened again. I had to use safe mode, uninstall the video drivers, reboot and then reinstall the drivers. So far so good.

    The questions:

    1. After this happens, when I reboot the system it takes a long time to show me the Gigabyte splash screen. Why?

    2. If I turn the system off and then press the button to start it, the fans come on for a second, then they shut off and then the system finally starts. Any ideas as to why this is?

    3. What could be causing Vista 64 to hang? Is this mobo Vista friendly?

I decided to remove the 8600GT and replace it with a 9600GT. We'll see what happens.

Tell me more about your setup...are you using raid, Gigabyte sata ports or Intel's (yellow) yellow ports?

And as always post your bios settings! :)

Hi - no RAID. My mobo does not have different color coding on the SATA connections on the board, but I'm using all the Intel ports AFAIK.

I'll get the BIOS settings shortly. It's very frustrating and I appreciate the help.

Power supply should not be an issue as long as it's in good condition.

His setup would run perfectly well on a good quality 450watt supply. I doubt the PC is drawing much more than 400w from the wall, let alone from the business end of the PSU.

Every forum I read seems to have people over estimating how much power their PC draws (no offence intended BTW), it's like "Not enough power" is the new black this season.

I would remove half your ram and try running two sticks at rated speed. 8GB on 4 sticks can require some tweaking to get right. If the two sticks work, you know you need to work on either MCH volts, vDIMM or timings. Could be a mixture of all of them.
