    also, I forgot to mention, but when the Q9650 was installed with both sticks of ram(dual channel), the board would continuosly reboot, and if I booted with only one stick, it would hang at either the splash screen or at post.

    Did you try PS/2 Mouse and Keyboard, or just PS/2 keyboard? Just checking as this is very odd for sure

    I do not think the BIOS is corrupted at all since the Q6600 works fine in it, but I am stumped as to what the issue could be now that you have answered a few things for me. You are setting your own ram settings manually correct? Like Performance Enhance standard, Ram voltage, tRD (Static tRead Value) to 8-10, and MCH 1.20-1.24? If not it could be your ram is not setup properly per the new CPU and that is why it posts but fails to go past the post screens.

    I would try once more with the Q6600 in and set these settings and save and apply/reboot to windows (To be sure the overclock works good enough to get ya there) and then shut down and try the new CPU. 45nm to 65nm move and 266 to 333 FSB move is going to require the strap to change in the NB and this may not be happening properly. It should be though with a clear CMOS but like you said you cannot load optimized so you may not be getting the change done yet. >>>

    On the good side, you have Newegg RMA So that should go over pretty easy for you. Good luck, and hope your replacement fires right up! Do not put the Q6600 in it first so if the above is the case you do not run into the same issue

    Hey lsdme,

    I was thinking of getting a different set of RAM for the replacement board. I currently have this kit:
    Newegg.com - Patriot Extreme Performance 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Desktop Memory
    which was used during the ordeal described above.

    which one would you recommend? which one is known to be fully compatible/stable with this board. I would prefer 2x2GB flavor.

    I have another question:
    since I still havent sent the board back, would flashing to an older bios, say F6 or F7, produce any changes, preferably positive? if a different bios might address this, I would be willing to give it one last try before I ship it off.

    UPDATE:
    flashing to older bios did not produce any results.

    Did you load optimized after you flashed then save/apply/reboot? Just checking

    Mushkin and Crucial get my votes for ram, it is what I use in all my builds. G.Skill also works great in Gigabyte boards, as should the ram you linked above

    yes I loaded optimized defaults as well as clear CMOS after the flash,but no luck.
    also, does this board prefer 800mhz or 1066mhz ram to be installed for an initial boot, or it doesnt make any difference?

    so I got a replacement board today, was stoked to try it out, put it in, hooked up the essentials, minimal boot only, and SAME CRAP AGAIN... WTF is wrong with your board, Gigabyte? it posts with 800FSB and 1066FSB chips but not with 1333FSB ones? I tried posting with E4400 and Q6600, which worked fine, go into BIOS easily and all that. I put in the Q9650, and nothing, the board powers on and off repeatedly. I tried it with a generic 800mhz Crucial ram which is listed as compatible on crucial's website, nothing. I popped in one of the working chips, edited the bios numerous times, trying out every possible NB strap and divider combo reasonable, still nothing! and yes the Q9650 works with other board.
    I think I have lost all hope for this board. Unless someone can really help me out and get this sh!t running properly as it should, Im writing Gigabyte off my list for future purchases. This is not the first Gigabyte board that has given me headache. Last year I had similar issues with one of the G33 micro boards, and ended up replacing it with a MSI G33 board which still runs fine today.

    When I got my EP45-UD3P here's what I did:
    1) Installed my E6550 cpu (7 x 333MHz).
    2) Installed 1 memory module in slot #1 (Crucial Ballistix 1GB, PC2-6400).
    3) Loaded OPTIMIZED settings, save settings and exit F10).
    4) Power off system and unplug external power cable to my psu.
    5) Installed new memory (Mushkin XP2-8500), 1 module only.
    6) Entered bios, confirmed memory volts in PC Health Status.
    7) Manually set dram volts to the recommended 2.00 volt setting.
    8) Manually set primary memory timings to the rated 5-5-5-15 settings.
    9) Save settings and exit.
    10) Repeated step 4 and installed the second memory module.
    11) Booted into Memtest86+ and ran an extended test, over 10 hours.

    It's possible that your memory is defective and won't post at its rated speed.
    Try this procedure, but at step 8, also configure your memory to run at 800MHz speeds using the 2.40B System Memory Multiplier.
    It's possible that your system will boot with only 1 memory module running at it's rated speed.
    You might need to try booting with different brand of 1066 memory.
