    Default EP45-DS3R + Won't Boot With 8GB Ram

    EP45-DS3R

    I went from 4 to 8 gigs of OCZ Reaper PC2 8500 5-5-5 @2.2v in 2GB pairs and now I can't boot with all 8GB installed. I also lowered timings and that didn't due it either.

    Any suggestions? Thanks.

    With 4x2GB of memory, you will probably be OK with memory speeds near 1000MHz.

    System Memory Multiplier ..............: 2.66 <--- set to 2.40B for 1015MHz memory speed
    note: if this doesn't work, use 2.00B multiplier

    CPU Clock Skew (ps)....................: <<<50 <--- set to 0
    MCH Clock Skew (ps)...................: <<<100 <--- set to 0

    note: clock skew is usually set to 0 except with some extreme overclocks

    the 0 scews didn't work. Nor did the 2.4 multiplier or setting the drive strength to 800 w/ stock timings.

    Upon not booting up I had to jump the board, and even with optimized/fail safe settings the computer won't boot up with 4 sticks. I swapped the new sticks with the old and have everything working fine right now so the problem can't be bad sticks either.

    Any other suggestions?

    We need more info, we're not mind readers.
    What "old" memory works? Does it work with your posted settings?
    There's a big difference between OPTIMIZED and FAIL SAFE settings, which did you load?

    1) List your system components in your signature.
    --> User CP tab (upper left corner of web page)
    --> select Edit Signature
    --> enter your hardware components (brand, model, etc.)
    --> include your bios version
    --> preview
    --> Save when complete

    2) Link to your ram's full specifications.

    3) Fill in the generic bios template (below)with your bios settings.
    --> Fill in Auto where appropriate.
    --> Update "??" values with what is displayed in your bios.

    4) Include a screenshot that includes:
    Memset using the SPD and ">>" tabs
    cpu-z main screen
    EasyTune6 --> TUNER tab --> ADVANCE tab --> VOLTAGE tab

    Old memory that is currently working is:

    OZC Reaoer HPC
    4GB (2X2GB)
    DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500)
    Cas Latency 5
    Timing 5-5-5-18
    Voltage 2.1 (Stick says 2.2)
    EVP 2.15

    Swapped new memory in (exact same memory however physically looks different) and it worked fine. However I couldn't run all 4 sticks together. Today the new sticks bluescreend on me twice. And tonight I'm not able to boot up with them at all -> new sticks have gone bad?

    Pictures below are with the old/current sticks in.

    Interesting that the RAM is running at PC2-6400 (400MHz)... However set in M.I.T. to drive at 1066 and frequency is at 1015.

    Default Re: EP45-DS3R + Won't Boot With 8GB Ram

    Most memory will NOT run at full rated speed when you're using 4x2GB. Many 1066 modules will run at ddr-1000 speeds or higher.

    Check the PC Health screen in your bios to see what dram voltage is applied. You might want to increase the dram bios setting to 2.22 volts

    The 1015MHz speed is due to using the 2.400B system memory multiplier at 423MHz (cpu speed).
    Changing to the 2.00B memory multiplier will run your ram at 846MHz.

    You should run Memtest86+ for at least 6 - 10 passes to test your new memory at it's rated 1066 speed using:
    Cpu Host Frequency = 400MHz
    System Memory Multiplier = 2.66D

    If the new modules pass this test, repeat the test with all 4 modules installed, using the old modules in one channel (slots # 1/3 or 2/4) and the new modules in the other memory channel.

    Check to see if each of your memory modules has the model and serial numbers on the sticker.
    This information is often available in the cpu-z SPD screen. If it is, note the infrormation for each slot, 1 - 4, by selecting the slot # in the upper left corner of the SPD screen.

    Contact OCZ tech support with this info and see what they have to say about compatibility.

    Default Re: EP45-DS3R + Won't Boot With 8GB Ram

    It is possible that although you have purchased the same product, the internal revision number may be different.

    I have recently purchased two sets of Corsair XMS2 PC-6400C%, and they were both diferent versions (one was v3.2 and the other kit was 4.2). Different version numbers can mean anything, from a slightly altered heatspreader design to completely different memory modules sorced from a different manufacturer.

    profJim suggested contacting OCZ. If the tests he suggest fail, that would be a goodidea. Tell them what's going on, and if the new modules are faulty, ask if you can either have replacements of the same revision as the older RAM, or a complete replacement of all 4 modules for a matched set.

    I'm not sure how OCZ are on customer service, but from dealing with Corsair, every time I've had a problem not solved by their suggestions they are happy to say "Lets get them replaced. How would you like it done?" Brilliant customer service. I hope OCZ come through for you if you can't solve your problem.
