Thread: ex54-ds4, 920, 6gb OC => cant "cold boot"

    Default ex58-ds4, 920, 6gb OC => cant "cold boot"

    Current BIOS: 7a
    Tested BIOSes: from 4, onwards

    Cooling: thermaltake ultra extreme 120 + deen 120mm fan

    Ram: 3x 2gb Gskill "midrange ddr3 1600" (dont remember model right now, but i tested stability @ stock timmings and higher also)

    HDDs: 2x500 gb RAID0 on intels controller

    OS: windows 7 (7077 right now, i will eventually install ubuntu and some other os in currently free partitions)

    My computer is rock solid with my OC, no temp problems (much less now, because of winter), nights of memtest ok, days of prime95/prime64 ok.

    But if i leave it off for a while, if i turn it on, after showing windows log in screen, it will BSOD with:

    0x000000F4 and making reference to some storage component (didnt take note, sorry)

    and today, after updating to 7a, i got a new one:

    STOP: c0000135 the program cant start because %hs is missing

    after the BSOD, i reboot, and it complains that there is no boot drive (drives where detected by the raid controller tho, but are not selectable if i accesed the one time boot menu), and then, i reboot again, and all is fine, windows loads, etc.

    I can also prevent this, by going into the BIOS menu, and leaving it there for 5 minutes or more, and rebooting, then, all is fine, no BSOD.

    This problem is NOT present if i dont overclock.

    Start over with your overclock. Since you say it is not present when not overclocked that is the issue of course.

    I can see from your settings you started with FAIL SAFE BIOS Settings, that is likely a huge part of your issue. I suggest you load Optimized defaults, something you should always do after you flash your BIOS. Then start your overclocking and tweaking work again. Do keep in mind previous BIOS settings may or may not work with a new BIOS and you may need more/less voltages for various things.

    FAIL SAFE can set various settings incorrectly per your hardware, that you can see and ones you cannot, so that can cause many issues especially when trying to overclock using those values as a starting point.

    Since you are using RAID, please do read this guide for Flashing a BIOS so you can see my suggestions for loading optimized with RAID Setup otherwise you can corrupt your array >>

    i tested using the memory on normal and on turbo, both perfectly stable, so i left it at turbo.

    i never tried manually setting timmings since there are tonnnnnnnnnnnnsss of them now. Last time i overclocked was with an nforce4 ultra from DFI, and i had a lot less there (then again, it had tons more than my k7 settup).

    ill try starting over, but my knowledge isnt enough to determine why the OC works, but has the cold boot problem :(

    pd: ill read your guide to prevent my array from breaking.

    OK, well if you did load optimized then no need to do so again.... Unless you are unsure if you have loaded fail safe between then and now.

    If you are sure you are using optimized then please give me your FULL Settings and I can advise back. If those are your full exact settings above then you are using fail safe

    I went to check settings, and i had a few wrong (those that were on 700mv, that i have no idea what they are for, were not set like that).

    i did reload optimal settings just in case, manually set things again, and corrected the info in this thread.

    pd: i was doing the correct procedure after flashing a new bios for keeping my array ok.

    just throwing it out there, is it possible one of your hard disks is failing? This does sound like an unstable OC issue or power issue, but make sure :D

    Try this for your 191 overclock, and be sure to disable EIST

    one of them is new, and the other one was ok before building this rig, but who knows, the problem is not there when not OCing, and no hdd tool reports a problem :(

    did you just ask me to try this settings ?

    HT on was usable for me up to 180 base clock as far as i remember (i got the 0x00000124 code when using more).

    I left EIST on cause i read it was necesary for turbo boost (hence permanente 21 multi) to work.

    I leave virtualization on cause i do use virtual box quiet regularily.

    ox00000124 most often means you need more QPI/Vtt, IOH can also help but mostly QPI/VTT

    Yes, I meant for you to try those settings, and sorry I did mean to enable LLC. I use it for sure, helps you not have to set such a high voltage at idle. Do use it

    EIST Can be disabled, and should be. It will not affect your Turbo mode at all.

    Virtualization can be left enabled as well, I use it myself. I just made that note incase you didn't use it

    Good luck, and post back your results and if you fail what settings you used and how it fails

    i applied the new settings, i have again "8 cpus" listed on the device manager, but prime64/gadgets/task manager see/can use only 4 cpus.

    this windows 7 installation was done with HT off, older ones were with ht on, later turned off.

    have in mind that this is a rig for everyday use, not some benchmark config.
    Some values for the memory timmings had defaults lower than what you told me to chose, so i chose the lowest you said.
    Others where defaulted to something in between, so i chose that too.

    It seems stable even with ht on now, but its not using the 8 cores :P (and i cant test the cold boot til tomorow )

    EDIT: REAL and CORE temp see only 2 temps
