    Default GA-965p-DS4 rev. 1.0, GSATA RAID0 + ICH8r RAID5 help.

    Hi guys.

I have a little problem with my old PC.

You see I want to expand its storage and currently have 2x 320gb Seagates on the GSATA (JMB36x) and wanted to add 4x 640gb WD's on the ICH8r.
I would go for more and larger drives however the ICH8r can only handle a maximum of 2tb for its volume size and only supports 4 drives in raid.
This is not the problem I need help with.

When I turned on the ICH8r's RAID function in the bios (F12b), plugged in a couple of spare 500gb HD's and reset the pc. The ICH8r's RAID bios ran but then the system completely skipped the Jmicron RAID bios and went looking for a boot system which there was none.

    The question is.

How do I enable the ICH8r and Jmicron RAID's at the same time so as to maximize my storage? How do I force the system to load both the ICH8r and Jmicron BIOS's on bootup and allow me to boot from the Jmicron?

    Reg,
    Nian

The "SATA RAID/AHCI Mode" is associated with the ICH8R controller and the "Onboard SATA/IDE Ctrl Mode" is associated with the JBMicron controller. Set them both to RAID (actually RAID/IDE for the JBM) and you should be able to run RAID with both SATA controllers.

Ahh, well you see. I have tried that.
I have a fair amount of knowledge, my only issue is something I find unusual and shouldn't be happening.

I guess what I am really asking is if there is a way to fix this problem where when both are set to raid, the Jmicron won't run. Or if its a design limmitation/flaw never mentioned in any manual.

I was hopeing that someone may have some prior experience with these old but solid motherboards.

That's strange. No such issues with the P35 and P45 boards I am currently. It's hard to believe the 965P board would be any different (similar SB/nearly identical on-board controller). You said the JBMicron BIOS does not appear during the boot with both controllers are set to RAID. Check the Hardisk Boot Priority in Advanced BIOS and see if the JBMicron array shows up there. Maybe an issue with the beta BIOS you are running? Maybe worth trying different BIOS revisions just to see if it makes any difference. Just trying to help.

Well actually the strangest thing is, if there are no hard drives installed in the ICH8r, just a burner, and if its set to raid in bios. It happily passes onto the Jmicron.

Its quite odd. Also as for different BIOS's, I had the F11h installed before and updated to the F12b to see if it would be fixed. No ofcourse.

    Still looking into it.

All good I believe, didn't like having the optical + HDD attached. Some weird thing.

Probably some programmer assuming that if you had a HDD + Optical on the ICH8r, then your not using the JMicron...

    Strange indeed.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if your board has 6 x Intel SATA slots, it will only use 0, 1, 2 and 3 for RAID. Have you tried your optical drive on channel 4 or 5 (ports 5 & 6)?

Reason I ask is I notice in Device manager on my board there are two ICH10R controllers, one for 4 ports and one for 2 ports to make up the 6 in total. I'd be interested to see if that helps. I'm thinking of setting up a RAID 0 2 x 640GB soon, and would prefer to use all Intel SATA ports, not the JMicron.
