Default XP fails to boot - mega frustration !

    Hi All
I've just about run out of ideas about solving this boot problem.
The PC spec is:- Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS4
    E8500 Core2 duo Processor
    Corsair Dominator memory 2x1Gb PC2-8500 C5 XMS2
    XP Home
    No floppy
Its been up and running well since Feb 09 then a few days ago it failed to boot on switch on.
Bios beep on start but the process halts at the 'Windows shut down abnormally' screen.........choose safe mode etc etc

Start windows normally produces a loop back to the same screen

Safe mode halts with a list of system32 files

Last known good config produces a blank screen

Booted with Windows cd into Recovery Console
Tried chkdsk c: /r 'found and fixed one or more errors'
    Tried Fixboot Fixmbr Bootcfg

Tried the normal Repair option....no joy
Then Format c: and reinstall XP which on restart produced a frozen XP logo screen

Tried another reinstall involving deleting and creating a new c: partition....nothing.
I did notice that the install was part complete just 532 MB of data on the partition.

Removed the 40GB SATA disc to another machine to check the integrity...everything fine...formatted the c: partition

Booted with Ghost cd and restored Ghost images from partition 2 to the c: partition. Dumped the images satisfactorily but PC still wouldn't boot

Can boot into PC-DOS to view files in backup partition
Now C: is the backup partition
    A: is the cd
B: gives 'seek error reading drive B'
all other partition letters give 'invalid drive specification'

I don't know where to go next....help much appreciated

    Thanks

Please add all your Specifications to your Tweak Town Signature. (And then we'll be able to easily see all your Specifications on every post you make.)

    1. Click where it says "User CP" at the top of any page on this forum when your logged in. Or maybe this might work: TweakTown Forums .

    2. Click, " Edit Signature " on the left of your Control Panel.

    3. Update the following with your own info and copy/paste it all into your new signature:

    <<< System Summary >>>
    > Power Supply: ________________________
    > Mainboard : ________________________
    > Chipset : ________________________
    > Processor : ________________________
    > CPU HeatSink and Fan (HSF): ________________________
    > Physical Memory : ________________________(Put a Link to your RAM's specifications here next to it.)
    > Video Card : ________________________
    > DVD-Rom Drive : ________________________
    > Monitor Type : ________________________
    > Operating System : ________________________

    4. Preview and save it.

And include your mobo rev#, bios version in your signature too.
    __________________________________________________ ____

In addition, to the above, remember when trying to reinstall a new OS from scratch, configure your PC with one HDD (completely formatted and only one partition), one DVD drive, one Video Card, KB, mouse, and all other devices unplugged.

    -Have you reset CMOS?
    -Do you have another PSU?
-Are you aware of the possibility of a short in your case having developed since February? (The changing temperatures are pretty drastic now.) To eliminate a case short as the cause, its possible to take your MOBO out of your case, place it on a non conductive material and test it. But search this forum for step-by-step on how to do it safely.
-Also, load Optimal Defaults in BIOS.

Can you make a memtest86 CD on another machine and see how that goes?
