    Hi Deini

I know I've PM'ed you about this, but for the benefit of the forum I'll repeat myself.

I have the exact same problem and near enough the same setup. My i7 is D0 stepping and my PSU is an Enermax Galaxy DXX 1000W. I also run 2x 285GTX in SLI. On default settings, once I get it to boot (about 8 attempts also) it runs great.

It seems to be behaving itself recently, although on power up it'll turn on, turn off then turn on and boot ok.

Im not sure if this is just coincidence but it appears to be linked to the ambient temperature, when cold I get the POST problem, when it's warm it'll just do the turn on/off/on thing. I doubt this is the problem though, just mentioning incase anyone has experienced this also.

I also have absolutely no overclocking potential, even an extra 50Mhz will cause it to fail. I can boot the system when overclocked, but as soon as I put load on the CPU the system will just turn off. I have a suspicion that this is a power supply problem, I can't verify this though.

My knowledge of power supplies is limited, I have been looking at the Corsair 850W HX as has been mentioned earlier. Looking at the specification it says the PSU supports ATX12V 2.3 and EPS12V 2.91 standards. Does anyone know if this is infact a requirement for i7 systems, could this be the cause of the problem?

An i7 system will run perfectly fine on an ATX v2 (released in 2003)or above PSU.

The different minor version numbers dictate minor changes . Here is what I dug up on revisions up to 2.2. Version 2.3 is guaranteed to be just as minor, and if v2.3 were required for Core i7, then there would be alot more people with problems:

    • ATX12V v2.01

This is a minor revision from June 2004. The −5 V rail was completely removed from the specification.
    • ATX12V v2.1

This is a minor revision from March 2005. The power was slightly increased on all rails. Efficiency requirements changed.
    • ATX12V v2.2

Another minor revision, the main change was a call for higher-quality connectors on the motherboard power connectors.

Mine also seems to act up only when it is warm, but I could also boot in the bios change something real quick and then it wont reboot even though it was cold seconds ago.

The fact that your system turns off under a load is suggestive of an inadequate power supply. Have you tried with just one of your gfx cards?

Also D0 stepping wasn't fully supported until the f6 bios; are you running the most current bios?

edit: I was just reading the XS thread on the ex58-extreme and found this: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/mai...58-ud4p_8.html
it seems they had some issues with this board and an enermax psu also.

Thank you to Psycho for clearing up the PSU versions :)

Ive tested F6 - F8b and Im using F8b bios at the moment and so far it seems to be the best in relation to the booting issue.

As for the power problem Ive tried with just one card plugged in and theres no difference in terms of overclocking ability, however the PSU is modular with 20amps on each rail so I guess if theres an issue with the CPU line then it wont be affected by the extra card.

Thanks for that link, I think im going to have to find the funds for a trusty Corsair PSU. I dont really have any faith in my Enermax anymore.

I am obviously dissapointed in my inferrior ABS Targan pile of garbage. I'm definatly writing them some nasty emails; it's only 3 months old!

If it acts up again ill let you all know, thanks for everyones help.

    Glad it's sorted.
I'd try for an RMA with Tagan if you can. When they send you a replacement, give it a try in your system. If all goes well, eBay it. If it doesn't then see if you can get a refund from the supplier, as the goods are obviously not "fit for purpose".

Depends on where you live of course, but in the UK it's the sellers responsibility to make sure goods are fit for purpose, and comply to all terms of the Sale Of Goods Act 1979. Your country and even state may have laws which help protect you.
