Thread: gigabyte gama-790gp-ud4h and crossfire?

    Lightbulb gigabyte gama-790gp-ud4h and crossfire?

I'm new to the whole discrete graphics card game and don't really understand the whole pcie vs pcie 2 bottlenecking issue for high performance cards. My question is, would I be able to buy say 2 ati radeon 4890's and put those in crossfire without being limited by my pcie slots? Thanks

Yes, you could buy two single GPU ATI cards and Crossfire them without problem on that board.

When running crossfire both slots will run at 8x speed rather than 16x. This makes no difference at all to performance, and your Crossfire will be just as fast as on a 2 * 16x PCIe config.

The only time it would make a difference is if you were to want to use CrossfireX, that is, two dual GPU (4870X2) cards. You would benefit from two full speed lanes then.

You may hear people say "8x isn't fast enough", when referring to single GPU cards, but that's c-r-a-p. If a twin GPU card isn't limited by a 16x interface, then a single GPU card will not be limited by an 8x interface. There is no bottlenecking issue. Just the fact that Crossfire is fine for two 8x, CrossfireX is best on two 16x.
