Thread: (EP45-UD3R) System Unstable w/ Default Settings. Seeking Advice.

    Unhappy (EP45-UD3R) System Unstable w/ Default Settings. Seeking Advice.

    First off, I should say that this is my first post on these forums. I was looking for solutions to my problem and stumbled across a few similar active threads here. Unfortunately none of the information gleaned there helped me find a solution. I am a long time computer user but have little experience overclocking/tweaking and I'll provide any information that I think is relevant.

    Now onto the problem.
    I have just put together a new system and installed Windows 7, here are the specs:
    CPU: Intel E8400 @ 3.00Ghz (Stepping A, Revision E0)
    RAM: GSKILL DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500)
    MB: EP45-UD3R (BIOS: F6)
    GFX: XFX Radeon 4890

    I had heard that this setup was a good choice for overclocking on a budget, so I installed Easy Tune 6 and figured I'd try the entry level "boost" to see how my system holds up before I get any pickier. The system hung as soon as I did this and I ended up having to reboot. Once I booted, I gave prime95 (64bit) a run and got both cores to error in 3-6 min: "FATAL ERROR: Rounding was 0.5, expected less than 0.4" (side note, I now get CRC check failures in steam games). I had read that this was most likely a memory error. Which sounds likely since I ran IntelBurnTest-2.1 five times and passed. Neither Core broke 55 degrees during that test according to SpeedFan. Overall system temp bounced between 48-52. After taking a look at the BIOS settings, I noticed that my mobo wasn't providing the recommended voltage to the ram. (Should be 2.0-2.1, was 1.8) I changed the voltage but that did not really solve the problem. Now when I run prime95 one of the two cores errors early on while the other keeps going and passes all the given tests (as far as i can tell that is, i turn off the test manually). I gotta say, I'm pretty worried because now even fail-safe defaults in the BIOS don't keep my system from.. well.. failing. I've tried some of the configs for a system exactly like mine from this thread: "http://forums.tweaktown.com/<wbr>f69/stable-e8400-oc-stock-<wbr>voltages-30561/" but ended up crashing or not booting. Eventually I reset to defaults, changed the voltage again to 2.0, got the system to boot, and here I am writing this post.


    NOTE: Just tried rebooting to save BIOS to file but it hangs. If any additional information is needed, I'll take a look.

    I would really appreciate anything that you think might help in diagnosing and/or solving this issue. Thank you for your time.

    Too 2 two too too too much information! (jk... its not even close to some of my own ramblings.)

    But lets get the signature part done first, and after that you'll be on your way to too much help.

    Please add all your Specifications to your Tweak Town Signature. (And then we'll be able to easily see all your Specifications on every post you make.)

    1. Click where it says "User CP" at the top of any page on this forum when your logged in. Or maybe this might work: TweakTown Forums .

    2. Click, " Edit Signature " on the left of your Control Panel.

    3. Update the following with your own info and copy/paste it all into your new signature:

    You're running a practically Beta Operating system on a brand new PC you just assembled AND you want to Over Clock.

    Solution:

    -Install a tried and true OS and learn to Over Clock on it. (WinXP or Vista)

    Ok, got the signature done. I should clarify that I AM NOT TRYING TO OC, I just want my system to be stable at the default settings. Did a pass of Memtest86+ -> no errors. I'll leave it running overnight. I doubt that the fact that I am running W7 plays any role here.

    I will try resetting/updating the BIOS, upping Vcore, and switching out ram. Really hope it's not the motherboard. Thank you for the reply.

    Good advice. I second the importance of saving a BIOS config.

    Below is a template that exactly matches your board. Please before posting settings for your BIOS, load Optimized Defaults right away. This is very important as it effects more board settings than are actually visible in the BIOS.

    Fill in the following template, replacing the values (voltages timings etc) inside the [ ] brackets with your own. Please be exact. Printing the template then filling it in before posting will help. Accuracy is key, as one wrongly posted value could confuse people trying to help.

    Guys, I mentioned in my first post that BIOS hangs when I try to save the settings to file.
    Anyways, ran memtest for 8 hours (12 passes) -> no errors
    Installed Vista, computer still restarts 3 times before booting. :/
    Going to try Prime95 again.

    Add your BIOS Version next to your MOBO in your sig. (See my "F2 Bios" and Psycho101's "F6" in our sigs?)

    (I see in original now in you initial post the "F6", but add it in case others don't notice it.)

    If you don't post a filled out BIOS template, there's no way anyone can help you sort it out. You need to post one, it's important. I can replicate the repeat booting with a couple of setting changes to my BIOS, so it's almost certainly a settings issue.

    I'll post the BIOS settings as soon as i can sit down and write them down. ;_;

    One more thing though...



    Just noticed that "Vcore2" is at 2.08V. I mean, I should be expecting some error in speedfan but nothing in the BIOS voltage settings even comes close to this. The rest of the voltages look pretty accurate too, so i have little reason to doubt the accuracy of this reading. The only odd thing then is that both cores are reported to have the same temperature. :/ I guess the mobo is screwed and is sending different voltages to each core. Anyone ever have a similar issue?

    Vcore 1 is what is going to your cpu,there is no seperate voltage for each cpu core.

    Vcore 2 is the voltage going to your memory you can rename it Vdimm or similar.

    both voltages will be a little less than what is set in bios.
