Default Two IDE/SATA drive startup problems

New set up with the GA-MA790-X-UD4P board. On the IDE side, I have the DVD-R/W in the boot path. When I hook up an IDE hard drive, neither are recognized. HDD alone and it is recognized. What could I be missing? A jumper issue? (The HDD doesn't have one, but I can't see the DVD jumper setting offhand without powering down.) Thanks.

What settings are you using for your IDE is it set to AHCI? Or RAID, Set it to IDE and see what happens. If your DVD is IDE and your HDD is SATA then no jumper would make them both not show up. Id say its going to be your IDE Mode. Set it to IDE not AHCI.

Thanks. I solved it by setting the jumpers on both devices to cable select.

That will do it. You should set your HDD to Master and your DVD To slave unless you have a cable select cable that actually says what what plug is, but your HDD should be master.

What is a "cable select cable that actually says what the plug is," a tag? The board supports two IDE devices and I know both jumpers are set to cable select per their instructions. The BIOS is choosing the DVD as master, which in case I have to boot from it seems like a good choice.

That happened while installing MS Office Pro 2000, twice. After installing a later version, i.e., from another CD, it didn't happen. Hmmm....

Really any IDE cable can be a Cable Select Cable. Which mean that the position on the cable that you plug your device into determines weather it is Master Or Slave. You do not need to have your DVD Set as Master to make it first boot. That is done in a different section of the BIOS. And yes on the plug on the cable it usually says "MASTER" or "SLAVE" I think the connection on the end of the cable is SLAVE. Cant be 100%. However when using only one IDE cable im not sure if you will loose speed which it set up with the DVD as master or not. You should just get a SATA HDD which are so much faster.
