    Default EP45-UD3R Bios settings help request

    I am not experienced at all with this but I'm really not looking to overclock much except maybe the processor at some point.

    Not looking to reinvent the wheel either. But it seems to me that the settings that I need for basic stability must be known - others probably have a similar or exact setup.

    I am having problems with my EP45-UD3R with Patriot Viper RAM 1066 and
    Q6600 intel processor with 4GB RAM and 1TB hard drive +

    If I change anything in Bios say to cruise it won't boot and other settings cause it to loop
    and windows will not start, with BSOD's. The only way I've been able to get it to run is with no cruise, no turbo, x9 on CPU to make 2.4 GHZ . I've heard that this processor can be cranked up considerably with no harm - I don't know how. The multiplier won't budge past 9 and the memory is showing 800 MHZ - no where near 1066. Also, will my memory be damaged for having it at auto and not 2.1 as stated on RAM ? . How do I know which BIOS version I have ? Which one is best for my board as I have downloaded F8 but not flashed ?
    Also, I don't see an option in BIOS to set for dual channel, is this automatic ? Basically I have almost everything on auto.

    - does anyone have the same setup as I do or close enough ?

    mm cruise? I assume thats some ET easy tune setting.

    See what your memory will clock to while holding the cpu on the lowest multiplier .
    That should give you an idea of the memorys capabilities.
    Generally the highest pc performance is with the highest fsb(cpu host ) reference frequency taking into account such things as
    1/ you want your cpu running at the highest frequency possible with the highest host/fsb reference frequency possible .
    provided the memory can take it.
    Ie you may end up running your memory below 1066 and still get better overall pc performance.
    If you have 800 rated memory you may need to overclock it .If you have 1066 rated memory you may need to underclock it unless its a really good sample and will overclock easily.

    You might get your 1066 mem running at that speed ok using a 2.4 or 2.66 multiplier ,and 800 mhz memory wouldnt run that high.
    However to get your 1066 mem running at that speed using a 2:00 multiplier would need a 530 or more exactly 533 mhz cpu/fsb ref.

    The mbrd itself isnt likely to support a speed that high with air cooling,but 490-510 seems possible and at a guess you would probably get more performance(memory bandwith etc )at 1020mhz memory speed(510x2) than 1066 (2.4 x445) etc.

    Im getting varying results on Vcore with cpu-z 1.12 + idle and core temp
    VID : 1.3250
    if I just turn up the CPU Frequency to 333 wouldn't that be the simplest way to oc safely ? cpu-z is reading my memory at 533 :(
    with FSB : RAM 1:2 the timings look as though they can be tightened to 4-4-4-12 at 266 fsb (where it is now)

    my idle temps according to core temp is 38 35 35 39

    thanks and maximum voltage for cpu is 1.35

    cpu 333 fsb mem 800 mhz 4-4-4-12 1.2625 vcore 2.08 v mem cpu 3.0 ghz

    If your VID really is 1.3250, then it's unlikely you'll be stable lower than that with a 600MHz overclock. If it were a 45nm chip, and maybe an E0 stepping quad, it would be possible, but unlikely on all but the best quality G0 stepping Q6600's.

    There have been two revisions (steppings)of the Q6600. To check which one you have, run CPU-Z. The stepping, oddly is contained in the "Revision" box (not the stepping box) on the main tab. To confirm your actual VID you can run Coretemp. It will show your BID at the bottom of the processor info section.

    Armed with the stepping and VID of your CPU it is possible to tell likely stable values for a decent overclock. You should have no trouble getting to 3GHz, but anything over this isn't guaranteed. Some Q6600's can do upward of 3.6GHz on modest voltages, others do the same speed with higher voltages, and some don't even make it to 3.4Hz, it's all about luck.

Ignore the values in the [ ] brackets, replace them with your own. Take care to be exact, as one wrong number could lead to you being given wrong/confusing advice:

    I was thinking more of holding your cpu at a lower multiplier and increasing fsb(host ref frequency) gradually.
    The driving strength profile should be there if you have advanced timings on manual.
    Static read value of 6 may be too low for that mem speed.
    Mch core may require 1.2v+
    Check out the other 45-UD3 with Q6600 posts , there should be plenty of them.

    If I reduce the multiplier to say 8 or 7 then what should I set the core at ? Auto im guessing
    If I reduce the FSB to 300
    Changes the whole equation - to my understanding
    then I might have to change the SMM

    Do you think I could have messed the MOBO with my mild attempt(I thought) because now on setting the alarm on POWER FAN FAILURE to enabled - It sounds off until I change it to disabled. I know the fan is running since I see and feel it blowing out. I just tried a flash to get my BIOS up to date to F9 but no difference in the response to the POWER FAN FAILURE ( which as said, is false alarm).

    As of right now I have reset back to stability with nothing torqued save the multiplier to 9. Y'now it runs pretty good that way

    However, If possible, I'd like to work with my initial attempt since it looks like a good start considering it boots and does not overheat.
    Whatever works eh ?

    oh, I just noticed that my Antec 380w Earthwatts with 4 pin 12v (not 8)might not be enough power, it's a close call if you add in aging(stats entered on Antec calculator). But I have a 500w Coolermaster that I could swap in. what think ye ?

    Well first of all do the load and then save optimised defaults then reboot,especially since you just changed the bios.

    Fan not working warning im not sure on you shouldnt need to set it to disabled .Ill check my own bios in a few.
    Edit:I checked my fan warnings.. they are all set to disabled,probably have been for 6 months or so and Im not going to go messing around with them now.
    Dual channel is automatic.
    Some mbrds) nvidia chipsets it seems) wont run the mem in dual channel.

    Since youre keen on the 333mhz cpu host ref/fsb speed ref frequency and you want to see if the memory will run and hold at 1066mhz ddr2 ,the multiplier to try is 3.20.
    You will probably have to enter your memorys voltage manually ,ie 2.1v + maybe a little more to account for voltage drop.
    The cpu voltage you are at now should be ok and you may have to enter in up to 1.3 v for mch core volts.

    The memory timings I put in are the usual ones for 1066mhz mem .. that or 5-5-5-18.

    Leave everything on standard etc as you have it.
    Im reluctant to put in settings when its not the same type of cpu/memory as mine ,but manually entering those voltages isnt going to wreck anything .
    If trying above put in the memory voltage and timings first up to 2.14 v...
    If it doesnt work gradually increase the mch voltage in .02 v steps from 1.2-1.3v until it boots.
    There are stickies above about memory timings and multipliers.. or u may get other posts probably with patriot viper 1066mhz mem and q6600 and most of the EP 45 UD3 boards seem to perform the same except for the T and C versions which can use ddr3 memory.

    the psu u have now should be okish as long as your not going to push the cpu much,yet anyway,
    But if you have the higher spec one waiting to pop in,you might as well.what power(watts) does your gx card consume?
    For the above Im assuming the pc was running stable with mem at 800mhz and the cpu core voltage u listed..if it wasnt you may have to increase the cpu core slightly until it is stable under testing before pumping up the memspeed.
