    Default P35-DS3L + Q9550 overclock help needed

    Hi

Just upgraded my E6600 to a Q9550+ OCZ Vendetta 2 cpu cooler cause its very hot here in the summer.

I am aiming for a 3.4Ghz overclock since i only have cheap ddr 2 ram.. so anything over 400 FSB is unreasonable to expect. Im on bios F9c.. the latest one.

    http://www.adm.hr/product_info.php?products_id=4912 I have 2x2gb sticks.

Its basically ddr2 800mhz 5-5-5-18 recomended settings. i used 5-5-5-15 and the advanced timings as noted below for my E6600 without any stability issues.

I am using IntelBurn test for stability testing and Farc Cry 2.

I cannot get 3.4ghz stable for some reason... temps are fine.

here are my setting using LSDmeASAP's template.

    Robust Graphics Booster___________ [Auto]
    CPU Clock Ratio ____________ [8]
    Fine tune clock ____________ [0.5]
    CPU Host Clock Control_ [Enabled]
    CPU Host Frequency (MHz)__________ [400]
    PCI Express Frequency (Mhz)_______ [100]
    C.I.A. 2__________________________ [Disabled]
    System Memory Multiplier (SPD)____ [2.00]
DRAM Timing Selectable_______ SPD __ [Manual]
    Performance Enhance = [Standard]

    CAS Latency Time________________ 5
    Dram RAS# to CAS# Delay_________ 5
    Dram RAS# Precharge Delay_______5
    Precharge Delay (tRAS)__________ 15
ACT to ACT Delay (tRRD)_________ 3
Rank Write to READ Delay________ 9
    Write to Precharge Delay_________ 3
    Refresh to ACT Delay______________ 50
    Read to Precharge Delay__________ 3
    Static tRead Value_______________ 7
    Static tRead Phase Adjust________ Auto

    System Voltage Control____ [Manual]
    DDR2 OverVoltage Control__ [normal]
    PCI-E OverVoltage Control_ [normal]
FSB OverVoltage Control___ [tried +0.1V and +0.2V]
    (G)MCH OverVoltage Control [tried +0.1V and +0.2V]
CPU Voltage Control_______ [tried everything from 1.2 to 1.35] (with vdroop 1.2 is around 1.15 1.35 is 1.30) under load vdroop is even higher by another .05 :(
    __________________

Please give me advice on what i should tweak to get it stable. i am thinking that ram is probably the cause i will try to loosen the advance timings and maybe MCH +0.3 even and add +0.1 to DDR 2 voltage even though its rated 1.8V

What about easytune? will that give me extra setting or does that only apply to P45 chipsets?

The GB website shows that ET5 is supported for your mobo, not ET6.
You can also try loosening your primary timings to 5-6-6-xx or 6-6-6-18 @ 400MHz.
You might be able to run a bit higher memory speeds with looser timings.
Does your system memory multiplier have more than one 2.0x setting?
As I recall one or more of the memory multipliers allows you to choose different MCH straps.

Hey profJim thx for the response.

anyways i kept everything the same as posted but upped MCH voltage to +0.3V. its the max my board allows me to.

I ran intelburn 10 times standard 10time max no issues. Also played l4d for 2 hours. all is fine.

i am gonna try lowering vcore now first to see the lowest stable voltage for 3.4ghz.
so far my vcore is 1.2V idle- 1.152V full load.

After i get the stables voltage im gonna try going higher on the FSB and loosening ram timings a bit to get them above 800. I just wonder if MCH +0.3 will be enough.

Does ET 5 allow higher mch voltage and should i even consider it safe going over +.03?

About the memory multiplier. i think there is 2.0 and 2.0+ gotta check.

I checked my P35-DS3L backup system and there is only one 2.0 memory multiplier option. I'm using bios version 6.
The are two 4.0 memory multiplier options.
I'll need to check again on the maximum MCH core voltage.
As I recall, ET5 and ET5 Pro do NOT provide the advanced system tweaks that ET6 offers.
Your current "value" ram is going to limit your ultimate overclock.

My P35 overclocked my E2140 100% and was stable.
My Crucial Ballistix (2.2 volt) DDR2-800 ram was stable at DDR2-1100 speeds.
I "crippled" this system to only run with a 75% o/c, memory @ 875MHz with 4-4-4-10 primary memory timings.

It looks like we're at opposite ends of the spectrum with our processors.

I used to have crucial ballistix 1066 ram but it didn't like my board. if my pc was off for longer then a few hours i couldn't boot it up without first taking a stick out and i was getting BSOD's too.. all with stock settings for the stick.

Anyways im happy with 3.4 for now. Its amazing but my minimum fps in team fortress 2 and l4d has literally doubled with a Q9550 compared to an E6600, so im still awestruck.

in the next few days ill try pushing it more. But as you said, the value ram will be the deciding factor.
    thx for the help.

I have the P35-DS4, similar boards, same processor. From what I learned so far with mine is do not touch vMCH, it cripples stability for some reason. Set VTT to [Normal], vMCH to [Normal] and set Static tRead Value to 12, put the rest of the advanced timings to AUTO, make sure LLC is off. If semi stable put VTT to +0.05v.

you are right, after a day of seeming stasbility MCh +0.3 proved unstable.. so now i loosened up the dvanced timings and dont even need fsb or mch at +0.1 at all.

As for LLC and VTT i dont have those on my board everything i have is shown in the first post. I am thing of pencil modding to lower vdroop. i already got a pic of where to pencil.

Will be trying 3.8 that you have but your ram is much better then mine.

these E0 Q9550's are great though. less Voltage needed for a quad then for a dual core. :)

See if your board has any unlockable BIOS settings. On the main BIOS menu press [CTRL] + [F1], and go back into the MIT.

With the cpu host frequency = 400MHz, your P35 will probably be stable with:
    Static tRead Value ......... [6]

When testing tRD values on my P35 and EP45 systems, I found that the P35 was stable with Static tRead Value one numerical setting lower (tighter) than the lowest stable setting on my EP45 system. My testing involved cpu speeds from the lower to upper 300MHz range. This wasn't a totally scientific test, as each system had different memory and processors.

My P35 system was also stable with MCH Core = +0.1 with ddr2-800 memory, 4 modules (3GB of memory).

Let us know how your system responds with the lower memory timing.
