P45 and X48 both offer excelent performance, and are the best chipsets available for socket 775 processors. The only advantage of an X48 seems to be dual 16x PCIe for CrossfireX and 3-Way CF. Other than that, I've seen UD3P/R boards clock just as high as $300 boards based on X48.

The Northbridge sink is screwed down on my board with a back plate to stop the board flexing. There was thermal wax on the underside, the type of stuff that's rock hard at room temp, but not like a thermal pad. I scraped it off, cleaned with alcohol and replaced it with MX-2.

The MOSFET sinks however use a very thick silicone pad and are held with push pins. I didn't replace it because it looked like the thickness of the pad was needed for the push pins to hold the sink on with enough force. Likely they don't get hot enough to warrant the trouble of trying. I don't have a spare pad to put back on either if just paste makes the mounting insecure.

DOn't know if changing the NB paste helped, as there is no NB temp sensor on the UD3P/R, just a PCB temp sensor near the Southbridge. Southbridge cooling is also a silicone pad and push pins, but it doesn't even get warm, let alone hot.

Okay people, I am convinced. Gonna grab my new board later this week :)
Oh and I love tweaking and modding! Might as well toy around some kind of improved CPU cooling and airflow in the case. Btw there is no newer revision than 1.1, right?

Version 1.1 is the newest. Mine is a version 1.0 board. Not sure of the difference between the two. It's very subtle, and likely not of much consequence. I have seen versions of the UD3P with push pins holding down the northbridge, but I think the 1.1 has screws. My 1.0 has screws too, so it's a bit of a mystery...

Hmm so I am running nicely, but the heatsinks on the board are HOT AS HELL. Is that normal? and I mean REALLY hot.

    Hot? Mine are barely warm.

Heat generated depends on how much voltage you're putting through it. Northbridge (MCH) shouldn't need much more than 1.2V at 333 FSB with 4GB RAM. Up to 1.3V with a high FSB and/or 8GB RAM is ok, but no need to go higher. I could literally rest the tip of my Johnson on the NB heatsink, it's that cool.

Southbridge (ICH Core) will be fine at its normal 1.1V for most. If you find you have problems with your USB ports or anything else connected to the ICH at high over clocks, increase to 1.2V.

It's either excessive voltages or poor case air flow that's heating your board up. You may have a defective board, but I doubt it. Poor thermal paste likely won't be the issue, as poor heatsink contact results in a cooler than normal sink.

I just pushed 1.4v through the MCH Core... still running...

Still couldn't get 533x9 to Boot Windows though... POSTs fine, but resets after Verifying DMI Data Pool......

Edit: DONT TRY THIS AT HOME!!!

If youve not touched any voltages you're probably running auto, the board will be over volting things. It can go a bit nuts with voltages, so make sure the following voltages are set manually: Vcore, VTT (CPU Ref), PLL, MCH Core, ICH Core, ICH I/O, DRAM. Your board should not be getting hot. I can happily hold my hand on the northbridge cooler indefinately, after the machine has been running Prime95 Large FFT for 12 hours.
