    Default OC Advice requested for Beginner

    Hi all,

    I am a newb to all things OC and would like your advice/opinion on the best settings for my needs.

    My System:
    CPU: Q9400
    MB: EP45T-UD3R Rev. 1.0 with F6 BIOS
    RAM: 8Gb of DDR3 Kingston KVR 1333D3N9 (4x 2Gb Modules)

    I want to use my system mostly for games and would like a stable oc in the range of 3.2ghz or 3.4Ghz. I have applied the settings used by Torin with some success and have achieved a stable OC at 3GHz. Please see my settings below and thanks in advance!!

    Also can anyone please explain why the DRAM voltage appears as 1.76volts in ET6 while the BIOS shows it as 1.50volts. Will this cause any harm to the RAM??

    Ive no experience of ddr3 UD3 boards but taking the memory side of things out of the equation for a minute.
    Quads such as mine seem to be happy enough on 490fsb x7. Quads such as Q9550 operate ok around the same frequency max on x8 or x8.5 multiplier.(higher fsb frequency=higher bandwidth in general)
    Depending on how good a clocker your cpu is and your cooler efficiency you should be able to get 450-470 fsb relatively easily.

    When bios variables are on auto the figure to the left isnt guaranteed to be what you will get.
    what does the memory voltage show as in the (pc health ) section of the bios?

    If i raise the FSB rate does that mean i also need to lower the Memory multiplier to keep its rate below 1333?? Also as the FSB is raised do any of the voltages need to be altered - CPU, MCH etc??.

    Can anyone give me any advice on the next step of my OC??

    As you raise FSB, if voltages are set on auto, the board will increase them over stock. The problem is, sometimes the board goes mental, and over volts stuff that doesn't need over volting.

    Set your voltages like this:

    To try for 3.2GHz, increase your FSB to 400 and add some more CPU voltage. I'd give the CPU 1.250V, just to give yourself a little head room. At 400 FSB all your other settings should be fine. Your RAM will be running closer to but still under it's rated speed, which is OK.

    Thanks for the advice Psycho. I have made those voltage changes to the BIOS and have raised the FSB to 400Mhz for a Clock Speed of 3.20GHz. Can you please explain the benefits of raising the CPU Vcore to 1.250V and if that is raised as suggested then do any of the other settings need to be changed as well?

    Also what tests are recommended and for how long should they be run? I have just run a 20 minute test of Prime95 to validate the new settings.

    What temps can be expected/tollerated with an OC?? As you can see in the pic below i am getting about 40C on the CPU at 100% load after 20 minutes with an ambient of 22C.

    Raising the cpu core voltage or any voltage really is to enable our friendly little electrons to get to their destination with the least resistance.
    Like the electron who is walkin thru town n sees a bar,he is dyin for a beer.
    There are some nice lookin girls around n they distract him.As we raise cpu speed the girls seem to lose more n more of their clothing so we have to increase the size of the beer keg in the bar window.

    Heh sorry..a bit bored here at mo.
    Just raising cpu voltage may be all thtat is needed at lower overclocking speeds
    Memory can be run at higher speeds than the cpufsb ref speed but not lower.
    Eg ddr2 memory with a 400mhz fsb ref speed and using a 2x multiplier will run at 800mhz double data rate.ddr3 memory with a 3x multiplier should be 1200mhz ie triple data rate.
    I dont have ddr3 memory except in my gx card so thats just theory.



    While you are overclocking tests like "memtest" for memory minimum of 15% of the available memory should be tested.
    Prime 95 say 30 min
    OCCT 30 min test.
    Perhaps to some testing on Sisoft Sandra / Everest to see how your pc performance is improving compared to similar standard clock systems.

    Once you reach close to or near your limit ie pc wont boot or tests fail.
    Then you start lowering settings and do full 10hr 16 hr ,24 hr tests etc.

    There are stickies above about general overclocking.
    Some of it will apply to your system but since you have a 775 cpu and ddr3 memory you wont get as much detailed feedback.(fewer people using that setup).

    You can see in my sig below what are the max temps approx that my pc will run reliably at .
    There is also a point where you will have to start increasing voltages etc a lot for a small performance gain for most people that seems to happen somewhere in the 470-500mhz fsb/cpu ref area on the 45 UD3 boards using a 7-8.5 ish cpu multiplier.

    For performance:
    priority 1
    get highest stable cpu speed you can
    priority 2
    get highest stable fsb speed you can
    priority 3
    get highest stable memory speed you can

    1 may conflict with 2 as you may be able to get a higher cpu speed with a higher multiplier on a lower fsb speed.3 may conflict with 1 and 2 as you might be able be able to get the memory running very fast on a high multiplier while the other 2 variables are understressed but it would give the lowest performance gain.
