    Default Newbie overclocking Intel Q9550

I have a system utilizing a Gigabyte EP45-UD3R motherboard, Intel Q9550 Quad Core 2.83GHz processor, and Corsair XMS2 Twin2X4096-6400 Cl 5-5-5-18 ram. I hear that this processor can be overclocked quite easily. I am new to overclocking and have tried increasing the bus speed from 333 to 400 and changing the memory multiplier from “auto” to 2.0, thus maintaining dram at 400MHz, 5-5-5-18. This increased my processor speed from 2.83 to 3.4 Gz. I do not have any extra CPU cooling features attached to my processor and without having to start playing with voltages (which I know nothing about) can anyone recommend SAFE, RELIABLE overclocking motherboard settings for this processor.I want to stress that I am not looking for any amazing results here. I would simply like a "little more bang for my buck". Other than the above CMOS changes I have also disabled C1E and EIST and left everything else in the optimized default settings.
    Thanks, Rob

By not having any extra cooling features attached to your processor,I assume you mean you have the standard intel cpu cooler.
If that is so you may not get much more than 3.4Ghz .

There are overclocking sticky posts above and lots of information in this post.

    Hi Kick,

Yes I am talking about the standard Intel CPU cooler and I would be happy to get to 3.4GHz without having to make any changes to voltages ! But if the system is not stable at 3.4 I'm happy with a lower speed. I will use the search feature to look at "Q9550 overclock" to see what comes up.
    Thanks for the post!
