Default Scanner Not working when plugged into MoBo USB ports??

    Hello All,

I have a Canon 8400F scanner and I can't get it to run on my desktop computer.

I have an older XP laptop machine that will run it just fine??

Talking with Canon tech support, they said it may be a USB power issue?!

It still wont run when I have it plugged into a USB hub?

Any Ideas? It was working a few days ago?

    -Jason

    I have:
    1. Uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers
    2. Re-imaged the HD to a "known good state"
    3. tried every fruit flavor of USB plug on my machine

Here is what I would suggest trying. Do you use any other USB devices on that computer? You may want to try unpluging them first. Unplug all USB devices. Did you uninstall all of your Cannon software with add and remove programs? If not do so. Before installing your Cannon software make sure all usb wires are unplugged and USB devices are off. Turn the Cannon 8400F off or unplug it. Before you plug the Cannon device power and USB wire to the Cannon 8400F back in. Please eliminate the USB hub that may be an issue. We want to try to eliminate all compatability issues. Before installing the Cannon software suite. The software should install the driver and suggest when it is safe to plug the wire in, and turn the scanner on. The wire first than power second. The power should be the last thing you turn on. Then give it the software time to finish installing before rebooting. This has worked for me when I had that issue.

    Thanks for the reply.

I was able to test the scanner on two other machines....

    1. Old XP laptop running XP(32Bit) home edition SP3. The scanner worked as advertized.

    2. Wife's Vista Ultimate (32Bit) with SP2. Scanner worked as advertized.

I am not sure what to make of this. Either the latest round of vista updates for the 64bit OS broke the drivers?? (for pete's sake the file is dated from 2007)

or there is something wrong with my main machine??

I have tried every USB plug on my system with out any luck. and I have uninstalled the drivers and software as you have discribed.

Also, the scanner will not work with any other 3rd party app (Photoshop Elements 7)

Jsun it sounds like you found a direction to pursue. You may want to check that out.
