Just a word of warning: DO NOT USE CATALYST 9.(! It's a bit of a mess up on ATI's part. 4850 performance is all over the place. I installed it ready to play Resident Evil 5 and noticed performance decreases across the board of between 10% and 50% depending on the title.

The hot fix 9.8's that add RE5 CrossfireX, Ghostbusters Anti Aliasing support and fix the Sims 3 glitch work perfectly.

RE5 isn't a bad game. I'm nearly finished on regular difficulty. Now I know I like the game I've ordered it on Play.cpm, so should have the retail version by tomorrow. I have a strict policy of "No demo, no purchase". As there was no playable demo, I DL'd it from Bittorrent. As per my own gaming moral code, if I like them I'll then buy them, if not I'll stop playing and delete the files/ISO. The fact that the US version was out on tuesday and it's not here in the UK until Friday also compelled me to download and play.

Capcom have done a good job with their Console > PC titles and it helps with their MT Framework engine being so well optimised for the PC (all MT games are developed on PC then coded cross platform later). Shame they couldn't just have released it on the same day, as everyone knows the stock is just sitting there in warehouses, it's not a last minute thing.

I recommend anyone who hasn't played the console version get it, it's a cool game. Even if you do have the console version, you might want the PC version so you don't have to suffer all the post processing added to make the game look OK on consoles. The PS3 version doesn't even have A, so you get a bit of a blur to things. XBox is a bit better with dynamic AA. If the 360 has enough juice it will use 4x MSAA, dropping to 2X MSAA in intense areas. Note that I get ~ 140 FPS average, and the console version is locked to 30 FPS on both platforms. As a result, controller input is much smoother on the PC as is the whole game in general.

Hi guys sorry, I havent been on for a couple of days, Been real busy at work. I didnt even know there was a CCC 9.9 but ill be sure to stay away from it. I havent been playing anything for a week or so, just been so stuffed from work and the damm heat its not funny. My Quad has been running fine with no problems even in the hot hot heat. I havent changed anything but just havent run Future Mark. I have my test HDD which I will put Vista on again oneday when I have time. Ive just worked a full day today (saturday) which totally sucks. I dont wanna mess with my RAID 1 Drives at all, no dual boot or nothing. But Im 99% sure that its not a sortware thing. Anyway.\

Good news. Defying Gravity isnt 100% cancelled. Yet. ABC has dropped it from the schedule for now, for whatever stupid reason they have however CTV is still rolling out the last 2 episodes. I have episode 9 on its way now. That is good. And Crazy **** but just the otherday I was talking about Californication and Bang there are 2 "leaked" DVD Screener Episodes out yesterday. Hooraa. Gunna pick my Motorbike up next week so I will have even less time to do much, but the bike is a must as i need it to give me some form of fitness. (dirt bike riding is quite strenuous)

Yeah I cant remember if I mentioned it but yeah the new GUI is totally crap on the newer CCC. Seems to be alot of missing options and just plain harder to find the stuff you want. WTF ATI?

Hmm I though I posted on here earlier. It seems to have vanished. Well Ill give the highlighted version.

Psycho, Hows the new screen going. Still loving it? What settings are you running? How the crossfire setup? Still holding its own?

Yes, Heroes is back on today? Im aquiering the lastest 2 episodes, which I dont at all feel bad about as I always buy the box sets anyway.

The Latest CCC sucks, just plainly sucks. I hope there are complaints. When I get more time I will start a thread on some ATI forum or something.

LSD I was wondering (for my wife) if you would know when Greys Anatomy is coming back on?

Still liking the Dell. I have noticed though that in a dark game (ie RE|5) in a dark room, there is some black fading going on. It looks a little like backlight bleeding, but disappears as you centre your eyes on the corners of the screen, telling me the back light is fine. It's a known IPS issue and it really isn't that bad actually. It also disappears if you move the screen a bit further away, but until I get my new specs from the optometrists, I can't really do that.

I've had to clock down to 700/2050 to keep stability at medium fan speed, which is still pretty quiet. Before doing that I had some random freezes and ativdag.dll/.sys errors (VPU Recover), which are gone now. It has to be the replacment RMA card holding the newer one back, as that was fine at 750/2200 on stock voltage. No matter, it absolutely rips through most games.

The new CCC GUI is crap. It takes an age to navigate now. I also get a strange problem on the Overdrive page. The window will visibly refresh every ~ 5 seconds. If I'm adjusting a slider when the GUI refreshes, it reverts back to the setting the slide rwas on before I moved it. Weird.

Crossfire for the most part is awesome, but as expected, some games don't do too well with it. I get zero gain in Prototype and actually get a performance drop in NFS:Shift. renaming shift.exe to AFR-FriendlyD3D.exe doesn't improve things and introduces real bad screen tearing and flickering. RE5 is going well though and I can play it completely maxed with 8x AA and Transparency AA set to high (quality). I still can't get Edge Detect AA (turns in game 4x to 12x and 8x to 24x) to function without a huge performance dip. For example in Half Life 2 I get ~300 FPS with nothing on screen in a scene with a limited horizon, with 8x AA etc. Using edge detect (24x) the frame rate drops to ~70 FPS in the same scene and to below 50 FPS in gun-fights etc.

I did notice that I now have the option for a true 16x AA, which is only possible on crossfire, but that gives a big dip in performance. To be honest I can JUST tell the difference between 4x and 8x, so 16x and 24x seems completely pointless to me.

Supernatural season 5 started a couple of weeks ago, so I watched the first two episodes last night (Monday), so far so so. More of the same isn't too bad though I suppose. "Open the gates to hell and then get teleported onto an airplane above the explosion... by God" is stretching the limits of the franchise a bit though.

Dunno if this snippet is of any use, but thought of your prob when i read it.

    Overclocking Q9550 - Overclockers Forums

"the Penryn Quads (Q9x00 series) have problems with massive FSB speeds. A lot of it seems to depend on the chipset; a P45 may give you better overclocking capability at the expense of some PCI-E bandwidth when you use Crossfire.

Thus, on an X38/X48 motherboard, I'd expect to see between 3.8 (450fsb) and 3.95Ghz (466fsb) as your max stable overclock if that cooler is able to do it. However, on the P45 you may be able to get as far as ~4.25Ghz (500FSB) if you're lucky.

Will that extra 200-400mhz of speed negate the lesser PCI-E bandwidth for crossfire? Guess it depends on your games and the settings you'll be using to play them."
