I'd definitely like to see what that Quad can do on the P45 board. It gets a Dual Core to 3.8 on stock volts so should handle quads respectably. All the feedback I've read suggests that an UD3 P45 is better for a quad, but there have been DS3 users with ~500 FSB on a quad 24/7, so it hopefully should be fine.

I know how one really needs to think carefully before pulling two systems apart though, it can be a hassle. I need to strip my rig to find the source of a damn rattle when all fans are on high, and I almost can't be bothered to do it.

Looks like HD5800 cards are out now. The beta of Cat 9.10 is also out, but only optimised for 5800's atm. Performance looks pretty much OK, and the 5870 beats the 285 by a good margin mostly. It's not quite as powerful as two 4890's, but does give a 4870 X2 a good challenge in many games. Hopefully the next 3-4 driver releases will improve DX10 speeds. I also can't wait to see a second gen DX11 game running on it in the next 6 months to a year. Sure, Dirt 2 is D|X11 enabled, but it's not like it's DX11 from the ground up. I'm sure they had to compromise on what DX11 features to use.

DX11 should see us peeps with DX10/10.1 cards get a good performance boost too due to the ease at which DX11 executes multi threading, meaning it's easier for developers to REALLY start to use multi core CPU's. A time where 8 core HT enabled CPU's will shine isn't too far away.

I read an in depth article about DX11 and one feature that excited me was real time tessellation. This is where info for a low detail 3D model is what is transfered by I/O pathways, and the GPU itself from that data and a black and white data map (similar to a parralax map, occlusion map etc) creates a much more detailed rendering on the fly . Think of it in this way: An orange juice company concentrates the juice from their oranges so that it can be transported cheaper and a tanker full can make many times its volume in actual juice. It ships to the bottling centre where water is re-added to make the juice back up to what it should be. this is what tessellation does. Concentrated the data, then "re-hydrates" or bulks it out internally in a faster way than using raw data. Sweet!

    Tweaktown had a test of 2 x 5870 crossfired.

    FarCry2 min fps 1 x 5870 74.39
    FarCry2 min fps 2 x 5870 111.29

That's a big gain for CF, or not?

Yes, that's pretty good. I'm seeing anywhere from 40% to 100% gain depending on the game. Forexample I get a 65 FPS average in RE5 with all maxed, 64bit HDR (.cfg file edit needed) and 8xAA, and it goes up to 125FPS average with two cards (DX9 mode, DX10 has performance issues).

I see a similar scaling in Far Cry 2 % wise as seen with the 5870. around 40%-50% gain and being able to use better IQ such as high on geometry and shaddows with 2xAA for "free" ie no performance penalty.

The only games Crossfire isn't great in atm is NFS:Shift and Prototype. NFS:Shift performance is actually lower, and Prototype doesn't scale at all for me. Crysis also isn't a huge responder. I do get a 20% increase in Crysis and the minimum FPS is better, making the game smoother. AA still kills performance though for me. Not as much of an issue on a 5870, but my cards have half the RAM bandwidth of a 256bit bus GDDR5 kitted out card.

Yes Yes, I know everyone wants to know if the Quad will go in the P45, but im afraid its not going to happen this weekend either. Its Harvest Time here in Central Queensland, AUSTRALIA, so Im super max freaking busy at work and looks like its going to be another weekend of working. I got my Motorbike the other day 2003 Yamaha YZ125 and I havent even had a chance to ride it.

This year has gone so spastically fast. I got this X48 board and my E8500 just before christmas last year and were nearly there again and it just doesnt feel that long ago.

I want the QUAD in my Daily driver cause I do heaps of encoding and stuff, not that im even sure that its any faster at doing it but I can do many other things better at the same time, so even if it goes good in the P45 its just going to piss me off I think cause it has NO RAID or 16x Crossfire so yeah.

Im still on 9.8 CCC and Crysis with crossfire enabled is at least playable with everything maxed. I get between 25-55 mostly. ARMA 2 Still sucks for the most part with FPS but outside in kinda open area it goes into the 30's. Ill just give it another couple of gigs worth of patches. lol..

I cant be sure if its a windows 7 thing or if my Q9550 is seriously a total lemon and is about to take a bit ****, but the last couple of days some media Ive playing in VLC or WMP has started off ok then gone all slowwwwwwmmmmooooooooooo and I havent even been running anything else??? also things are seeming less responsive? IDK

Another thought, when I ran the QUAD first up with the ASUS Artice Square Cooler Im 99% Sure that I had IDLE temps and stuff was nominal. But after installing the NH-U12P and tightning it up (which mounts wayyyyyy tighter then the ASUS) I have stuck IDLE temps. Could physical pressure on the CPU cause this? Could this have some weired effect in the not letting me overclock this ***** or what? I should ****ing RMA this stupid peice of crap. Maybe I would get lucky (not) and they would accedently send me an I7 975 back in its place?? IDK

Im More tempted to put the E8500 back in, crank it up to 3.8Ghz on Stock V's and just run with it a while and see if I can actually tell if anything is slower and if not im sure those extra mhz's would benifit my gaming more then extra cores at this present time. So many choices, so much lack of time. ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Yours probably isn't like this, but just in case it is....

I tried everything Lsdmeasap said to try several times. I'm actually fairly happy with the way it is.

The E8500 is a powerful processor even at the default speed. I overclocked my NVidea 9800 GTX up to the superclocked version and even with the E8500 at factory speed I am playing Crysis with everything on the High Settings with an average of 28-30 FPS.

What I am probably going to do is get a Gigabyte P45 board when they arrive and I'm fairly sure that just a different board will allow me to oc my E8500 to 3.8 GHz using a 400 MHz CPU clock (1600 MHz FSB)---like everybody else!! My son will receive a hand-me-down X48-DQ6.

I just got a new x48-dq6 last month, I found that there is no way to change the FSB on my mobo even I change it from 333 to 334, it always change back to 333, no matter what value of FSB you have saved in the bios, it always use the default FSB instead. I have tried to update the bios in different versions, F6, F6b, F7b, F7d, all of them I have tested and no luck. I have also tried to ask my dealer and use the Gigabyte TSZ, noone can help me to solve this problem, in your case you can still use C.I.A.2 to get some overclocking, but in my case, it is no luck too. I discovered this thread and got some ideas here to help me to solve this problem, and I did. I reply this thread as pay back. My successful steps as below.

    1. take out the battery and wait 2 minutes because I want to clear the CMOS
    2. power up the PC and get inside the Qflash, update the bios from F6 to f7b
    3. get inside the bios, (something strange here, because I found my previous setting in the bios, suppose it should be default factory setting)
    4. power off the pc and take out the battery again, wait half an hour, make sure the CMOS has cleaned
    5. power up the pc and get inside the bios, this time I cannot see my previous setting in bios, and then press F7 to load the optimal setting for every page in the bios, and then make the setting depends on your needs, and this time you will see the FSB can be changed again in POST, at least it can work for me.

Hmm its all very intersting. Yeah IDK maybe Its my BIOS being a BETA IDK, Once or Twice for some odd reason, usually due to power outages when I turn everything back on it boots up with "some" stock BIOS values like FSB and Multi. I cant explain it. Im just happy that my PC is near silent and still goes good. I was doing a little work, after work, on a Dell I7 computer I sold to a Client and man that thing just screams when you start doing things on it. Thats one of the reasons, sadly that its not my SETI@HOME ***** PC cause as soon as you fire up the BIONIC client it just howls. These 15 hour days suck.

Their problem sounded similar to yrs, but u r best judge of how similar.

You could try updating to f8e using his numbered method?

Totally irrelevant, but I have noticed your sig's Win 7 build 7323 and build 7232. Is that right, or ....(?)

Doing a new build for a mate. Is the GA-EX58-UD3R a good board to get a mild overclock on the 920? Are there any perticular ram that wont work well with this board that you guys know about?

I'd go with the Mushkin that Lsdmeasap reviewed. Other than that, some nice quality DDR3, either 1333 @7-7-7-21 or 1600 at 8-8-8-24 would be good. The 1333 will probably do 1600+ at 9-9-9-27 or lower too.

As the EX58a boards are looking more and more like vaporware, the UD3R sounds fine to me.
