The pre-order scheme starts in the UK on 11th July (the same day the US offer ends).

It's slightly different, in that we get a FULL version of Windows 7 for 49.99. However it's dubbed the "E" version and due to anti competition laws does not contain a web browser (Internet Explorer). It's a bit of a bargain, but anyone buying it should be sure to download a copy of their preferred browser before install and burn it to a DVD.

Indeed. No IE8. But I think it's utter ****e anyway, so I'm pleased. It'll stop the odd moronic program using IE to open links and ignoring the default browser settings.

The performance of IE compared to Chrome, Safari and even FireFox is a shambles.

The good thing about the RC of 7 is it's good until March 2010, but 1/2 price is too good to miss out on. I reckon that one of the reasons they're doing pre-orders at a discount is to combat piracy, but another factor must be to make sure it beats Vista and other previous versions in terms of speed of sales.

Yeah I bet that at that price they would get as many people Downloading Pirated copies. I agree with you that IE 8 Sucks balls but having no Browser is a little annoying when you first start up a fresh install. But I guess just get Firefox on USB and ur set. I have been using Firefox SinceI installed Windows 7 (ie8) because A) its slow B) for some unknown fraking reason (probably some frakup from upgrading from vista) if I open many multiply tabs some do not load @ all. I have to open one after it to load. If I close the last tab that isnt loading and open another on it wont load either, I got to open 1 or 2 more after it to work. VERY ANOYING. It doesnt do it on the 64bit 7 either build 7000 or 7232 so Im putting it down to upgrading still annoying and since Firefox 3.5 has the little new tab button they have just about covered all bases. However it does take heaps more time to start up then IE but thats probably windows thing and Wont be an issue next week when im running QUAD power. Yay.

You guys get a full copy because the E version cannot be upgraded from Vista, which has IE8 tied into the OS. Further upgrading will also be a bit different for you guys. Guess you will have to "deal with" full versions :p

One problem I can see though is patches and support may lag behind a bit for the "E" version of 7.

I shouldn't think that it will effect updating or support, having the |E version, as the updates are all modular. Only difference (if you don't intend on using IE) is some patches may need to be re-worked due to lack of browser integration.

And you are correct about the no upgrade path, but it does stem from the EU anti competition ruling. I believe M$ found it easier to rip IE from the full version or didn't have time to evaluate both versions for functionality after IE is removed. Probably the latter. I guess if it were upgrading a version of Vista with the user running IE, it may have to delete IE or risk incompatibilities, as it's not allowed to contain an ounce of browser code. A bit mad, but if it opens up options for people to experience non M$ web browsing, I support it.
