    Thanks for posting your experiences.

Memtest has just hit the "100 pass" mark at 40 hours. I'll leave if for another day or so just to be sure and then ill give your non-raid suggestion a go.

I'll be a bit pissed if it is (but atleast i'll know the root cause) because I bought the ssd's specifically to use as OS drives (windows and installed apps are so snappy on them!).

yeah well, I forked out too much for my four 500gb disks back in janurary, expecting to be able to run an os off them in raid 0 + 1 and turns out i can't.

once you have an os thats not running on an array, maybe do a prime95 stress test (blend mode) for 24 hours, if it doesnt crash/lockup/stop, and is error free, you'll know your system is configured right and stable :)

edit: I think dropping in a raid card would fix my problem, it seems to be just with the intergrated raid, although my problem could be that my drives are non enterprise models, meaning they are not TLER enabled, plus one of the four disks of mine has a different LBA maximum value over the other 3, so my trouble could be from any of that above, but incase it wasnt and is an issue that hasnt been widespread but exists, then at least you know what to try :D

FWIW I have had several successful RAID 0 setups using onboard controllers - always the OS drive. Most recently I had two SSDs on my UD4P in RAID 0 with Windows 7.

Let me know if you have or dont have any problems with raid 0+1 please :)
ifs the issue ive talked about is specific to my mobo, i'll rma it.
Have no way of really telling unless someone else runs a raid 0+1 setup on a ud5

I don't have enough similar sized disks for do a 0+1. My raids are purely for speed.

Nice! so you run an do os on it and have you ever found the system to freeze up to the degree you have to hard restart when playing music or video for ages? :)

I have 3x WD Caviar Black's 640GB in RAID 0 using the Intel ICH10R controller and besides having to switch my DVD drive over to the Gigabyte/JMicron controller to be able to boot to MemTest I have not had any issues!

Have you had any issues with the UD5 board booting? I ask, because on the board I have now and the one I RMA'ed it acted like it posts three times, but then it has no problems afterwards -- just makes for a little longer boot time.

I press my power button and it fires up, posts and loads windows, used to have the extra ICH10 Raid screen, but my board doesnt post 3 times, that sounds like the common power cycle loop problem, you might need to adjust your bios settings or try a different bios version to get yours to stop doing that, the only time mine will power itself off and power on again is when I adjust something signifigant in my UD5's bios, like voltage or when i overclock it. (im very n00b at overclocking but have no trouble setting up i7 rigs to run properly at stock settings.)

ok. I've finally gotten around to mirroring my raid root disk back onto a standard ide disk.

Results ... current uptime of 2 days 21 hours no crashes no hangs no lock ups. No lock ups in games at all (played for about 4 hours last night). Gaming is normally the biggest highlighter of the issue. If the machine is up for ~ 24 hours and you try and start a game ... boom. Hard lockup. Using an IDE boot device this doesn't happen.

Qwerty, i think you were right all along! All fingers are currently pointing at the intel raid controller.

I now have 2 useless ssd's because of this issue.

Is there other firmware for this controller that we can try out to see if it resolves this issue? I've seen some of the custom made bios's that say they include other raid controller firmware. I havn't looked into how it works but is the ich10r bios part of the normal bios firmware updates?

Seems i was behind on windows drivers for the intel controller. I'll update those, rebuild the raid array and revert to booting from the raid controller and see if that helps.

Can anyone explain how the intel controller rom is updated though? I've looked on the intel website and there isn't anything there about it so im thinking its integrated into a bios upgrade or something?
