Default New CPU...?? Q9550 vs. Q9550

    Hello All,

I am beginning to think of getting a new CPU for my computer. I have a E8500 and I have just been frustrated with its O/C ability. I am also starting to see some degridation (I think) with the chip...??
I was getting random BSOD and crashes during boot and I had to lower my O/C to 3.825GHz from the 4GHz it was sitting at for about ~5 months?!?

So I am looking at Q9550 or the Q9550. There is a $100 dollar difference between the two on the egg.

Is the $100 justified for the Q9650??

Thanks for your inputs. Expect to see a thread looking for help with my degrading chip....

    -sigh-

    I assume u mean a 9650 or a 9550.
As far as I know there isnt much overclk potential difference between them.
Your 8500 dual should be capable of a greater overclock for normal use on the board, games etc.If its a lot of multimedia work a quad might be better.
Any chance its the memory that has been stessed too much.Ive heard of memory modules degrading, not so much cpu's.

I'd get the Q9550 as long as it's the E0 stepping.

ON the subject of your E8500 instability, it could very well be a heat issue. It's summer time now in the northern hemisphere, and ambient temps effect air cooling dramatically. Even if your CPU is in a safe temp range with this increased ambient heat, it could still cause instability. Heat increases impedance, which requires more cooling and/or higher voltage. The higher voltage causes yet more heat etc.

I would certainly look at increasing Vcore and running some tests, keeping an eye on temps. As kick suggests, RAM could also be the issue. Not very often I recommend its use, but running Memtest for 4 hours or so would be useful (at the 4GHz clock speed) to make sure there are no hardware issues.

    Thank you for the feedback.

I did mean the Q9650 vs the Q9550. I would like to be able to stay at 4 GHz and call it a day. I am using air cooling and I think I have a veru good setup. MM -U2UFO case.

When I setup my O/C I ran mem test for 24hrs and had zero errors.

About a month ago, was having some stability issues. Made a couple of tweaks and it seemed stable again.

I will run the mem test again and post back.

    From my origional issues:

    Hello All,

I have been running at 4 GHz for a couple of months now with out any issues.

Recently when powering on from a cold boot, the system will crash at the loading windows screen and then load the default BIOS settings.

When I go into the BIOS the red dialog box will be there stating that the BIOS isn't stable.

Can you please help me figure out these issues?

hmmm... change your strap to 2.ooD and your memory latch to 400MHz...?
I don't see why your PLL is that high for a 471FSB either.

You could try out an alternative 4GHz build and see what happens, 471 is such a strange number... here is a link to my oc's. I use an E8400, but you should be able to make some sense of my numbers... maybe...?

I can't think of why this would all of a sudden start to be unstable though, I just amn't that smart...

As for your OP, all the UD3P owners I know that own q9xxx's are having hard times getting past 4GHz without serious heat issues. They refer to them as their furnaces...

I had both the 9550 and the 9650. my 9550 was a c1 stepping not a e0 stepping like the 9650 is only available in a e0. The 9550 i could only get to 3.85 8.5x450. The 9650 I am able to go past 4g but then again i had the 9550 on the asus p5q pro and the 9650 is on the gigabyte ud3p. I would get he the 9650.

As Mentioned the Q9650 is only available in E0 Stepping. However I read most of the reviews on Newegg about the Q9550 and most state that after about may this year they all seemed to be getting E0 Stepping Q9550. I just bought a Q9550. Have yet to get a stable overclock. But I havent tried thatttt hard yet. I also have a E8500 Running 3.8 sweet on stock volts. Theres F/A difference between Stock Q9550 & 3.8 E8500 in encoding a dvd. But well see when I get it overclocked.

I would be more leaning towards a ram issue or some other problem rather than a CPU dying. Do you get Blue Screens when running it at Stock?
