Also if the 3rd slot will only run at 4x with the other two lanes filled, tripple Crossfire wouldn't work well in the first place as a single card needs more than 4x (maybe 6.5x to 7x max, not sure of what kind of bandwidth they suck up, certainly not the full 8x).

Of it's the pipe going from NB to SB, you may just be able to remove it. It should simply twist out of the end of both sinks. The pipe wouldn't be benefiting the SB, but removing it may increase NB heat which before was being pumped to the SB sink to dissipate. It seems poor design to me that the block the 1x slot. It's one of those wierd mysteries like having 4 fan headers and only two that can give a full 12V.....
I think adding sound card on the 3rd slot.. would be:

16-8-8 (from the manual if you put a video card in 3rd slot)
    or
16-15-1 (theory ? since sound cards only use x1)
    or
16-16-1 by chance lol ! (same as above... since -1 only not a video card)

That's why i don't want to remove the heatpipe lol

It should fit in any PCIE slot, from 1x to 16x. Don't plug it in the PCI slots.
or you mean the sound card won't really fit the motherboard with any case? can u take a picture?
I mean the second orange slot x4

I know ppl using X-Fi PCI-E with their Crossfire Setup on UD5 and no complain.

I'm using mine in the bottom slot.
    Mods Rigs - Picture Enlarge

I had it in the (orange) top slot for some time, but moved it back down because:
    - 16x16 or 16x8 has no performance impact on my system (Benchmarked)
    - Top GPU was getting a little hot.

Any Pci-e slot will do just fine...

Nice to hear others with similar boards have no problem.

Can I just confirm for my own curiousity, are you aying it definitely drops to 16x/8x C3D76? Obviously with two single GPU cards it's a non issue, just wondering.

Also @C3D76, sorry for the slightly OT question, but with your GTX's so close together, do the temps of the top one suffer? I ask this because I'm going crossfire soon and my traditional case layout with PSU at the top means the fan of my second T-Rad 2 will be a couple of mm from the bottom of the case. I'm just worried about heat and possibly extra noise from the fan working hard. Again sorry for OT but didn't think that was worth a new thread. Would appreciate your experience on this.

so you mean the X-Fi was the cause of your TOP GPU getting hot?

    Psycho:

I haven't verified the 16/8 firsthand, but I think that his how the X58 without the nf200 chip works ^^.
As for the GPU's, the top card does run a bit hotter by a few degrees. But then one of my cards runs hotter than the other anyway, so I put it in the bottom :). I also placed a 120mm fan directly in front of the cards, blowing towards the rear which helps.

    Aquax:

The GPU's top surface is really close to the X-FI, and more heat is trapped. The GPU also makes the X-fi really hot in the top (orange) slot config.
Might also just be my 260's, they have small vents in the rear top area....

C3D76: Nice rig, love the watercooling ! :D you can check via running 2 GPU-Z's if the video cards are running at 16x or 8x. If you have time can you check it out ?

I know that 16x8 might not notice any performance drop but i just want to find out if it goes 16-8 or 16-16-1 or whatever :P
Also whats the difference using the on board audio 7.1 vs the X-FI sound card?

I can't use PCIX1 and X4 on my board because its blocked by the Silent heat pipe 2 heatsink, C3D's removed his thou.

    Thx Zero :).

Ok, I just checked with GPU-z and with current config (X-Fi bottom slot):
    -GPU1 @ x16
    -GPU2 @ x8

p.s. I have never tried the onboard audio on this board.

Thanks for the info C3D76. I'll definitely keep an eye on the temps of the bottom card when I can afford a second. If theey get too hot, a 120mm inside the case should help ferry more cool air from the front intake.

You do have a very nice system. I see you've taken time to tidy cables nicely. I hate an untidy case, and yours is very neat.
