Default GA X58 Extreme + Creative Labs X-Fi Xtreme Gamer Fatality Sound Card

I am planning on purchasing this sound card: Creative PCI Express X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Pro Series Creative PCI Express Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Professional Series Sound Card

the thing is it uses Available PCI Express (x1, x4, x8 or x16) slot

My rig at the moment has 2 4890's in CF Mode running at 16x, if i add the sound card at the 8x slot would the 2 4890's still be running at 16x mode ? or will it become 16x-8x ? since i read on site if you use the 3rd slot it would make the 2nd slot 8x instead of 16x..

Just trying to find some clarification, and no i cannot use the PCI x1 and x4 slots because its covered by the huge silent 2 heatpipe cooler from gigabyte.. it would be a waste of money not to use this.

    You mobo supports 2 slots 16x and 1 slot 8x, adding X-Fi in the 8x slot, doesn't affect the 2 other slots with 16x so you will get 2 4890 CF @ 16x and X-Fi @ 1x

you sure about this ? i read somewhere if you put any pcie hardware on the 8x slot(3rdslot).. the 2nd slot 16x would automatically work as 8x.. thats what im afraid of XD

    a bump to this..

"The PCIEX8_1 slot shares bandwidth with the PCIEX16_2 slot. When PCIEX8_1 is populated with a PCI Express graphics card, the PCIEX16_2 slot will operate at up to x8 mode."

The question is if i put the sound card in PCIE 8X Slot would be it make the 2nd PCIE 16x Slot to 8x ? although the sound card should only use PCIE 1x.

Why you don't put the X-Fi in the second orange slot?

Before you gonna buy that sound card.... be sure to check, if it will fit first. I got same mobo and an xfi extreme gamer fatal.. pro sound card... and my sound card is in its box right now, because it doesnt fit in any slot that I can put it in. I just doesnt fit (looks like it is too short), tried in two cases and no use. Two graphic cards in SLI and I got like 2 free slots that I can put the sound card in, but as I wrote earlier... it doesnt fit :(

the 2nd orange slot which is 8x is shared bandwidth with the 2nd slot which is 16x. i am wondering if i put the sound card on the orange slot [8x] it would decrease the 2nd slot from 16x to 15x or 16x to 8x.. that's what i am afraid of..

It should fit in any PCIE slot, from 1x to 16x. Don't plug it in the PCI slots.
or you mean the sound card won't really fit the motherboard with any case? can u take a picture?

You are correct zerosaku, a 1x PCIe card will fit in any size PCIe slot.

Sorry I can't answer your question, but I would assume that adding something else on the PCIe bus would indeed rob lanes from the three full size slots. Someone else would have to confirm this. I know things like the integrated NIC and sound chip run from the PCIe bus and don't effect GFX card lanes, so maybe installing in the first 1x slot near the Northbridge would use those lanes rather than bring your Crossfire down to 16x/8x.

It is worth noting however that with two single GPU cards, the difference between 16x/16x and 8x/8x is zero. Thinking logically, if a 4870 X2 is happy and has enough bandwidth on a 16x slot, then a 4870/4890 will be using around half the bandwidth, and 8x will be more than plenty. The only time 8x/8x isn't enough is if you CrossfireX with two 4870 x2's, or in the case of SLI, two 295's.

Thanks for the reply, i would love to put the sound card on the 1x or 4x pcie slot but i can't, it's blocked by the Silent Heat Pipe 2 cooler. It would be a waste to remove it.

I would assume until someone else posts who has a similar config, that you'd need to use the 3rd PCIe and let your lanes drop to 8x/8x or 16x/8x. As I say, this will 100% definitely not impact performance. Also if the 3rd slot will only run at 4x with the other two lanes filled, tripple Crossfire wouldn't work well in the first place as a single card needs more than 4x (maybe 6.5x to 7x max, not sure of what kind of bandwidth they suck up, certainly not the full 8x).

Of it's the pipe going from NB to SB, you may just be able to remove it. It should simply twist out of the end of both sinks. The pipe wouldn't be benefiting the SB, but removing it may increase NB heat which before was being pumped to the SB sink to dissipate. It seems poor design to me that the block the 1x slot. It's one of those wierd mysteries like having 4 fan headers and only two that can give a full 12V.....
