You should not be using CIA2 as from what I understand it will Overvolt your CPU Automagically which is not going to be good. If you insist on using it (which you should) then keep a super clock eye on your vcore and temps. Overclocking should be done from the MIT section in your BIOS. If you leave on EIST and the other thing that I keep forgetting it will throttle your CPU down a bit when not under load. Thats good enough for me. Im Sure when others reply they will say something similar

(repost from other thread for informational purposes)

yes i have also had very good luck with C.I.A.2...not sure why it gets bashed by people so much
it doesnt raise voltages like many ppl seem to think
one thing i found was to manually set the CPU voltage (i.e. selecting 1.275 in my case instead of 'Auto')
with C1E and EIST on, that causes it to lower the multiplier at idle without dropping the voltage (which was what caused instability for me), and i have used the CIA2 with top results since i built this computer. (dont ask me why the cpu voltage thing works that way, i have no idea ;) )

i have oc'ed to 3.00, so im dropping to 2.25Ghz at idle, and ramping up to 3.52Ghz at full load with perfect stability...its pretty cool :)

On the other hand, Easytune (any version) i found to be both inaccurate and unstable, and the automatic overclocking settings on there DO raise voltages and stuff...i would kick that to the curb pronto ;)

CIA2 doesn't change voltages, no. However, I have tried the facility. Here are my results (starting from optimized defaults which are 12 hour Prime blend stable, stock everything except PCIe frequency, which I locked to 100MHz):

    • Tried full thrust, Got to windows loading screen (Win 7, and yes, it's been a perfectly stable OS, regardless of it being a release candidate). PC froze as soon as the loading screen appeared.
    • Tried Turbo, same result as above.
    • Tried Racing, then Sports, Same result, complete freeze on loading screen.
    • Set cruise and saved. This time windows loaded, cool. I checked CPU-Z and FSB was at its stock 266. Loaded Orthos, used Small FFT. Orthos failed in 3 seconds. I hit print screen to save a screenshot, but the PC BSOD'd as MS Paint was loading (Page Fault).

I don't think I can get very far dynamically overclocking without setting a higher Vcore manually. The Page Fault suggests to me that CIA2 isn't managing RAM speeds correctly for my system. I'll give it another try and set my RAM manually to DDR-800, 5-5-5-15 to give it some headroom. CIA2's Cruise setting sets a 288 FSB (managed to see that before the crash). If the SMM remains the same, the RAM is being run at DDR-1152, which it simply will not do regardless of timings and voltages.

I'll give the mentioned a try later. Note that I don't have a problem with people using CIA2, as you can see from my other comments here. I will state however from my experience so far, it's not a set and forget utility for everyone. Some might be able to just ram it on Full Thrust, but I can't.

The total experement took around 10 minutes, what with the crashes, reboots to change settings etc. Seeing as I had this chip up to 3.4GHz completely stable from the first OC attempt, I'm not liking CIA2 so far. This is just my opinion though, others may find that it works perfectly fine.

I'll report back with regards to setting a manual RAM clock, then see if CIA2 still brings the system down.

Glad to see others at least attempting!

I agree this is not for beginners, since at the very least, the RAM needs to be manually set in order to avoid instability. My voltages did not need adjusting until I hit the 4GHz mark.

I just updated ET6 with latest version (realized I had one from May) and so far it seems to be much better on the fluctuations I have been experiencing. I haven't had much time for voltages lately but will be changing things soon.

I agree completely! I did not even like music until the day I heard Phish for the first time. Of course the LSD probably helped.

Anyhow, I still have not been able to get much past 4.3GHz, and have a little more wiggle room with my max temperatures. I am certain I can get to 4.4GHz with the right voltages.

What's the max Vcore, 4 24/7 use, I can set in BIOS without hurting my CPU? I am afraid to set it higher than 1.365. And/or any other suggested voltages? Psycho101 mentioned MCH ref tuning but I have not had much luck with it.

I'm so happy, I found Lsdmeasap!

for the record, Phish wasnt qualified to hold the Dead's dirty underpants, and even Bob Weir on his worst night didnt sing as bad as Trey and co. ;)

at least the dead had a couple good records :)

Phish is way more than music though, especially to certain people. I have even been to a few concerts where entrance into the arena/concert area was not even in my plans.

They do have some great tunes though, but also draw in something MUCH More

Phisherman, can you please be specific in what you would like advice from me about? And tell me how you use CIA2 in conjunction with the BIOS so I will know how to advise you

"IMO" Phish is the greatest band which has ever existed. And while we could have a music debate, thats not why were here. So feel free to start a new post.

Sorry for confusing you with my prior messages about using ET6 CIA2. I just use ET6 for confirming settings in BIOS. depending on the set manual OC, I use different CIA2 settings to reach wanted GHz. I believe I have it set to full throttle mode at the moment, since it downclocks to 2.2GHz.

I suppose the most helpful thing you can do for me is to play, "Big Brother" if you don't mind. I just want to make sure I am not doing anything which will cost me $$$ in the next year. I have been slacking on getting my BIOS settings posted and will try to get that done today.

My case temperatures are around 38 degrees and I am awaiting new case fans today which should improve temps.
