Default Stuttering audio when using keyboard

    Board: GA-MA78GM-S2H (rev 1.0)
BIOS: F7 (also F5 had the same problem)
    CPU: Athlon64 X2 5200+
    Mem: 6GB PC2-6400
OS: Windows 7 (build 7100) but XP SP3 had the same problem
Drivers: Windows, Gigabyte or Realtek - all the same symptoms.

Problem: audio playing in the background stutters when I type in another programme. For example I am typing this is Firefox and its creating stuttering in an mp3 playing on Windows Media Player. Happens with all media players and programmes accepting keyboard input. Sometimes its bad, sometimes not at all.

Under XP, upon reading a suggestion online, I changed the computer driver from from ACPI Multiprocessor PC to Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC. This cured the stuttering but meant that one of my two CPU cores was not utilised.

Windows 7 has the same problems.

Gigabyte support have tried to recreate the problem but failed and seem to have run out of ideas.

    Can anyone suggest anything?

    Many thanks, Joe

You could disable onboard sound and try a pci sound card and see if it still doest it.

I ass-u-me your using onboard sound.

Looks like bus/irq sharing/conlict to me.
Have you loaded optimized defaults or whatever this motherboard has as equvalent, made any recent changes in BIOS?
Did you had the problem since the begining or did it develope with time?
What type of keyboard is it?

    Sorry yes, onboard sound.

I haven't got a soundcard handy at the moment but I kind of feel it would fix the problem.

I loaded optimised defaults after Gigabyte tech support suggested it. Since then I have done a fresh install of Windows 7 on a new hard disk. The problem was occuring right from the beginning.

The keyboard is just a basic old keyboard with ps/2 connection.

Well since it exhibits that same problem no matter what you tried as above in your 1st post it has to be one of two things. Onboard sound or the speakers them selfs.

edit: By onboard sound i mean by incorrectly wired (connectors), front panel jacks, or drivers. That could even apply to the speker wiring. Aslo when you say gigabyte drivers you mean the one including Microsoft UAA Driver

Have you tried a USB Keyboard yet? I have the same type of motherboard (rev1.1) but I use a USB keyboard. I never had that problem with it.

artdrivers: I haven't tried a usb keyboard yet. Unfortunately I haven't got one near me but I guess its the logical thing to try.

Conners: I have tried with different external connections. However, given that it is solved by disabling multiprocessor support in XP it has to be a software/hardware problem. Could it be a CPU problem? I can't see why but the driver change kind of hints that maybe that is an issue.

With regards to drivers. For XP I tried the one on the CD, the one on Gigabyte's website and the one on Realtek's website. For Windows 7 I've tried the inbuilt Win 7 driver and the Realtek one.

By the way, thanks to everyone for helping.

I am almost positive it is not the drivers. We are using the same drivers. You also used Windows 7 build 7000 and xp. I also have both and I can use both without any sound problems.

OK thanks. Maybe its a bug with PS/2 keyboards or something strange in my hardware configuration that doesn't look strange.

One last thing. Audio in games when using keyboard is fine.

    Thanks all. Joe
