    Unhappy EP45-UD3P: Help with re-boot issues

    First off here are the settings that I am currently using:

    About every 3rd or 4th boot out of 5 results in the whole system powering down and re-starting twice after which it finally starts with default settings. If I go into the BIOS M.I.T. and dismiss the red warning dialog and leave the settings as they are then the system will power down, restart and boot into Windows.

    I have tested the above settings using all three Prime95 tests for 24 hours and feel that the system is stable. My CPU core temps. are good with mid 60's C for Small FFT's. The system is running Vista x64 SP2.

    I can't think of anything else to add at the moment. If somebody could look things over and make any suggestions I certainly would appreciate it.

    These failed boots and then reset to defaults usually come from overclocks that aren't 100% stable. Prime 95 isn't a perfect stability test and for some components the strain at startup might be higher than that during Prime or normalr operation resulting in the system failing to boot but appearing stable when it does boot.

    One thing that I can see in your settings that could cause a problem is that you're using the 333MHz strap. Change your system memory multiplier to one with a D suffix (for a 400 MHz strap) and see if that helps. Also VCore is pretty low for 4GHz, maybe icnreasign that may help too. The RAM should also need more than 1.9V to run at 1068MHz, these kits are usually rated at 2.1-2.2V.

    A somewhat different behavior I observed, is that sometimes when I boot it start looping, then I turn the PSU switch off when it shuts down, whait for next boot attempt (the fans will spin for a second with what's left in the capacitors,), and press the power button for ~15 secons, then switch the PSU back on and boot, and when I go to the MIT there is no red warning.
    But that only happened as Nickel020 said, with not a 100% stable settings.

    The B strap sometimes works better in the higher 400s, so I read in the forum, but yeah worth checking.

    Not if this kit is what he has (the ipmortance of having your ram link in your sig)

    VCore and MCH Core is where I would look, and optionally set Channel Driving Strength to 1066.
    Try starting Prime95 as soon as you can when Windows boot, this sometimes make it fail quickely where otherwise would take hours.

    Thanks to both of you for your feedback. I was having trouble running with the "D" strap earlier but after reading your comments I decided to revisit 2.00D and I seem to have things "BIOS Stable"

    Right now I am re-running my stability tests to see if things hold together. I've never run across anything like this before with Windows being rock solid but the BIOS still kicking things out. Once I changed my perspective and made sure the boot process was working first the rest seems to have gone normally. I'll know for sure after this weekend. (I hate waiting for these marathon test sessions )

    There is no realy way to tell, but you are +1 Static tRead and -168 MHz, what performance you get?
    Your memory is capable of DDR-1100 and sold as a 8GB kit, I don't see the reason why it would not run as DDR-1068.
    Maybe MCH Core 1.24-1.26v will do the trick, perheps 1.28v.

    Here is what Everest reports:

    I lost nearly 1000 MB/s on my Read Throughput because I had to go +1 on Static tRD. Everything was stable in Windows (but not during every BIOS post) using 2.40B strap with tRD=8 but I can't seem to turn the corner on 2.00D. I've pushed MCH Core all the way to 1.40V and can't get past the BIOS kicking it back at me.

    I'm at a point now where my ignorance with this chipset is holding me back.

    For example, I tested my G.Skill 1GB 1066 ram stick which gives me no less trouble, it boots with 1.1v MCH Core(windows still crash,) but it won't even post with 1.2v MCH Core. More is not always better.

    You're absolutely right; I am whining! I don't know about any other benchmarks as I haven't run anything else for now. I'll trade performance for a rock solid system any day though.

    When I thought things were stable when running 2.40B I was able to take MCH Core down to 1.1V. With Static tRD=8 I bumped MCH Core up one increment at a time till I got to 1.4V. Each increment resulted in BIOS lasting longer and longer before dying. I didn't want to go any higher because I don't know what the upper end is for MCH Core.
