    Default GA-EP45-UD3P Stability Issues

    I just finished a fresh build about a week ago and have been having stability problems at stock settings since the beginning...

    The Build (all new minus hdd and optical) :
    GA-EP45-UD3P rev 1.6, BIOS ver. FB
    Intel Q8400, stock cooler
    G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) Model F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK, in slots 1 and 3
    EVGA 260GTX 896MB (non-superclocked version), Driver 190.38
    Western Digital GP 750GB 16MB cache - WD7500AACS
    Corsair CMPSU-750TX
    Lite-On ATAPI DVD A DH20A4P
    Gigabyte Wireless Card GN-WP01GS
    Antec 300 case
    Windows xp 32-bit (I know its not recognizing all 4GB RAM but hopefully this is temporary)
    Drivers are up to date

    OS: originally Windows 7 64-bit RC 7100 but there were frequent stop errors via BSODs. Many were fixed by adjusting RAM voltage and timings to manufacturer recommended settings and reinstalling windows xp

    After all this, my system is still not stable. I get BSODs and lockups about once a day playing games and very rarely while idle. There is generally not an error message though I have seen "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL". One of the common codes is 0x0000008E.
    Initially suspecting a RAM issue, I ran Memtest86+ with both sticks in for ~20 passes and 0 errors.

    HDD passes chkdsk and WD Data Lifeguard

    Prime95 passes small FFTs for at least 3 hrs (haven't run it longer than that yet) but fails large FFTs and blend within 2 minutes. CPU gets hot. It gets into the upper 60s at 100% load, idles in mid-30s.

    My goal is to run this build stable at stock speeds/settings, I am not looking to OC and I need some guidance to make this build stable. This is my first build, so unfortunately I don't have any spare parts easily available to swap in.

    post your bios settings

    you can cntrl-c a template from another post such as this one http://forums.tweaktown.com/f69/sett...-normal-33297/ and then cntrl-v it and edit in yours.

    Do not use Auto it tends to over volt. Make the corrections I have done in red that stock volts for stock clock. see if it stable after those corrections.

    Thanks for the replies so far, I was unaware of the over-volting on auto. Ill make those changes to the BIOS and see how it works. Thanks for going through everything Acebmxer.

    EDIT: No change that I can see so far. It's still failing Prime95 large FFTs and blend in <1 minute

    Excuse the double-post but there's a new development. I tried something I probably should have tried a while ago and that was move the RAM sticks from slots 1 + 3 to slots 2 + 4. Prime95 ran 11.5hrs with no errors (stopped manually) with the BIOS settings above. Things seem much more stable so far.

    Leads me to suspect the memory controller and slots 1 + 3... Any ideas? suggestions?

    Yeah, try to move them back, maybe they were not seated properly.
    If there's still a problem with the same settings, I'd go with your suspition.

    EDIT: To remove any doubt, try DDR-800 or another pair of sticks if you have, if there's still a problem, there'es definatly something wrong with the controller or slots.

    Thanks for the suggestions Chike,

    I've reseated the memory in slots 1 + 3 and the same prime95 failing problem still arises. The peculiar thing is that each stick seems to work fine in either slot 1 or 3 on its own but not together in 1 + 3.

    I'll see if I can persuade a friend to let me borrow his RAM to try out but until then I'll keep testing different configurations. Is there a dual channel configuration setting I am missing or something? the individual slots seem fine, but used together there are problems...

    Then it may only be a settings problem, try some more MCH Core up to 1.24-1.26v. Also watch BIOS HW Monitor to see what is the actual applied voltage to the memory.

    I spoke too soon.

    2 cores show errors in prime95 large FFTs in the 40min - 1hr range while running 1 stick in slot 3 (tried both sticks). I will make the BIOS changes you suggest to see what happens but I am back to suspecting the motherboard. Thanks again Chike.

    I know auto may overvolt things at higher settings ,but for stock it should be fine.Did you load and save optimum defaults and boot off those,if that doesnt work set your main memory timings to exactly what they should be.
    Does the 333mhz mentioned above not come up as your cpu ref with optimum defaults?
