    Default GA-EP45-UD3P MOBO Memory problem

    Yeah I know surprise.

    Just bought these items:
    Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P
    G.SKILL 8GB (4x2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066(PC2 8500)
    SAPPHIRE 100225L Radeon HD 3870 512MB 256-bit GDDR4 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP
    Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 Yorkfield 2.83GHz 12MB L2 Cache LGA 775 95W Quad-Core Processor

All BIOS settings are the Optimized default. Only slots 2 and 4 will allow memory. If I place any memory in slots 1 and 3, then I cannot even get into the BIOS. Sometimes the TAB will work and post that all 8GB of RAM is there, but I can never get into the BIOS.

So currently I have a running system with only 4GB in the board, slots 2 and 4. Everything is on auto settings. Somewhat stable, some hiccups when playing GRID or TF2. How could I get all the memory working and booting. Or are slots 1 and 3 bunk? Thought this was a tricky one. Anyone have a stab at it?

What do you mean by "somewhat stable"? Just low FPS or actual crashes? If the system is stable you should try updating the BIOS. issues like this are often fixed in newer BIOSes.

Did you try only putting memory in 1 & 3 and leaving 2 & 4 empty? Your post isn't entirely clear about this.
Have you tried both kits in 2 & 4? Maybe one of the sticks in the other kit is defective.

The FPS is great however, I get a pause and then it seems like a leap forward. Almost like an FPS spike if that sort of thing existed. I have the most current BIOS (FB). Could the beta ones have a solution for this?

Yes, I have tested both sets of sticks in 2 and 4 and they both work.

As to what combinations I have tried...1 and 3 alone, as well as with 2 and 4. Also just alone with one RAM chip on 1.

You can try other BIOS verions (newer is not always better, older ones might not have your problem). But form what it sounds like there's something wrong with your board.

If you already have two sticks installed and you add two more, then you'll often see problems. But if your RAM works in 2 & 4 but not in 1 & 3 then then either the BIOS has some issues (which I don't think is the problem with this board) or the board itself is defective.

I'd contact your retailer or Gigabyte to have the board replaced.

this sound like a problem i had but it was a unstable overclock. Try going to stock clock and see if problem still happens.

Try adding just 2 sticks of ram in and increasing MCH voltage a bit shut down installed the other 2 sticks and see if that will get you to boot. Do not go over 1.4v on the MCH. This is a ep45-ud3p v1.6 correct since your using FB bios?

Alright, I tried everything suggested to get the memory working in slots 1 and 3. NO Luck.

I honestly think that any combination of G.Skill memory and Gigabyte boards is asking for problems. However, I have requested my RMA for the motherboard, just to see if I get it back that I can get slots 1 and 3 working.

If that works but the system still locks up (freezes then comes back to life in 5 sec) in TF2 then I'm sending back both the motherboard and memory and getting something completely different.

There should be a warning for these boards and memory combinations. If you go to the G Skill forums they have memory configuration postings as stickys for MANY Gigabyte boards.

I'll let you know how it works out.
